Technical Water in the engine...

as some of you may know me little 1.8 is nearly dead.. (actually it's been like this for 5 years now.. ever since dealer rebuild.. it feels a bit off balance and that really bugs me) so.. been looking at new engines.. anything you buy new from fiat would be about that price and it’s a short engine.. i am not aware of fiat selling recon engines (been told they don't) perhaps this is a dealer recon or third party of some kind? Open your existing engine - if there isn't much damage you might be able to fix it yourself (machining is also not a problem – lots of places do it).. Otherwise.. you can buy a new stilo for 2000 odd squid (you can even get a 2.4 for that amount on a 52/53 plate)

edit: my memory seems to be failing (need to snack on a few extra megabytes tomorrow morning) - this might’ve been a recon.. (my fiat quote for 1.8) but it was definitely a short engine

if you are rebuilding your engine your self you can get stronger con rods, modified pistons etc. and do the above.. i recon you can easilly get an extra 100 horses

At BEST you're looking at head re-shim, new con-rod plus various head / sump gaskets and so on.

had a look at the engine tonight..


findings:
all the oil has leaked to the floor..

there was a small lump of metal sitting in the bay.. so theats gave of/through the block/hea somewhere.

i took the oil cap off and took out the dipstick, both were very creamy, so i'm guessing the headgasket has blown aswell.


i spoke to recoditioned-engines this afternoon, they said if theres no hole in my engine they can recondition that for £600, and it will esentially be a 0mile new engine.
But if there is they can more than likely provide me with a recond one to put in for roughly £950.
im guessing it will be the second option seeing as i found a random lump of metal this afternoon....

Now you know the engine is totaled (the only slight bit of good news is that now you know your ECU is OK as the sparks were simply the con-rod literally hammering it's way out of the crankcase ) your choice should be clear.

You're always telling us you're a high earner so why not throw up to say £4K at getting yourself a nice JTD with skyroof. Bozzy sold his for something like that and his was a cracking example. The skyroof will bring a big smile to your face and when you feel the torque you'll have a massive

I can't see it making economic sense to fix your existing motor unless you can maybe pick-up a 1.4 for a really good price - although it must have some value as spares.

Somethings you just have to put down to experience so I guess you wont be messing with the induction again

Sorry to hear your news about your car Coyle, After all that hard work too at least the insides didnt get wet as that would have been a disaster.

As for his induction, i just think he was unlucky that he didnt see the flood and after all floods are not that easy to see in the dark as i know but never had the misfortune to drown a engine.

What ever you do i hope your car is up and running soon.

I know but the hard fact is that modding a car is nearly always dead money (some might argue it even devalues the car)

I agree any car is worth a lot more if it's actually functional (hence keep looking for a cheap engine) but you need to be brutally realistic in a hard economic climate.

It's still very much a buyer's market.

oh i dont think he should pay out for one of these so called recon ones, a lot of places aree dodgy, if they know the engine is good all they do is clean an paint them.

but there must be cheap ones at scrappys out there, no all scrappys are on ebay.

Doubly unlucky I'd say

Unlucky not to see the flood and appreciate the consequences
Unlucky that he let his dad try to start it.

The 100% fact is though that had he not messed with the induction in the 1st place then his engine would still be fine today. It's just a hard way to learn (we've all done dumb stuff including me at some time or other)
