I think i have learnt how to do this on my ECU with a fiatecuscan cable and free software.

I am sure many people would like to know how to do this on their own car but was wondering what other members feel about the ordinary person having access to this information via this particular forum?

Should the information be only known by the learned professionals and learned thieves or can it safely be in the hands of car enthusiasts facing the economics of repairing their car or wrecking it because of the electronics?

mes and cables= virgin ecu? yea that would be nice to know , thiefes will get what they want no matter what so it doesnt rly matter, some people here posted links a while ago to massive stealing of punto ecus in uk where they were just sticking crowbars in and lifting front hoods and simply cutting it off with all cables still attached

I just meant you use the same cable as you use with MES. Other free software is needed.

I am still waiting for an ECU from Ebay to test this out but so far I found I could download the contents of my current ECU EEPROM using the MEE7EEPROM command from nefmoto and have a look at it with a hex editor.

Surprisingly with no other extra wiring needed, all I had to do was take the plug off nearest the windscreen and put a ground wire on pin 20 then put ignition on and remove the wire after 3 seconds so that 'Boot mode' is activitated and the plug stays off. Not all ECU's need boot mode but my one did. I have bosch model 0261208029. On Nefmoto plenty of people are saying you need to have your car battery on a charger but I found my 2008 battery was fine. For the ECU ground connection I used a single pin connector used in digital radio model servos.

I do not need to virginise the ebay ECU I am getting. I just wanted to see if I could do it. What I want to do is clone the current ECU so the Ebay one is an exact copy. All you need to do for cloning is just copying the flash file and eeprom over to the Ebay one without changing them - which is much simpler than messing around with the hex using the hex editor.

I found if you want to clone your ECU you do not need to buy a Galetto 1260 cable for the Galetto 1260 software you will need for copying the flash memory. All you need to do is use an easy to use program to change the serial number of the read write OBD2 cable you already have.

I found when I used ME7EEPROM from nefarious

http://nefariousmotorsports.com/foru...21504#msg21504

I had to remove the ground cable from pin 20 2/3 seconds after ignition on but using the free galetto1260 software to read the flash memory it was necessary to leave the ground cable on.

So I am all set now and the Ebay ECU could be here in a few days time:)

Using Google I found many instances of unmodified uploaded 0261208029 files on places like http://nefariousmotorsports.com which are identical to the flash file I got from my ECU so I can be confidant I have correctly downloaded my flash file and it is probable the ebay ECU will already have this file on board.

You can compare your downloaded file to another file using this hex editor which has a comparison tool.

I got the Ebay ECU. The flash memory was the same as mine so I copied the EEPROM using ME7EEPROM and it works no problems that I can see so far. So that was CLONING

Doing a test for virginisation is going to be harder because the checksum calculation given on the alfa document (above) were not correct for my ECU so probably the method is going to be different too
