Guys, guys, guys, guys! Cos there's only them and HiQ and HiQ are crap. Didn't have much choice.
I forgot to mention, I checked my coolant levels earlier today and the engine coolant bottle is at the max line. What on earth is going on?! :s

Can hardly take it to Fiat - 30 odd miles away to risk it dying / cutting out / not going more than 20mph all the way there.

Surely there's an independant garage somewhere local! search online! Kwik fit will charge you for all sorts of things! and if it goes wrong they never take responsibility and try to charge you again to correct it!

There might be but regardless, you can't trust any garage or mechanic these days - not even Fiat themselves. :( Hmph. Need someone with experience who has worked as a Fiat mechanic for years before and knows their stuff, really.

If Nationwide quote loads I will obviously phone up Fiat but might need to get towed to the nearest garage as I don't think I'd trust driving it there in its current state of mind. But as said before, Fiat fobbed me off and reassured me my car was absolutely fine when it obviously wasn't, because after Christmas, this goes and happens :(

Ok it's in the garage this morning, lets see what they come up with.

Thanks for that Ffoxy! There only seems to be one in my town with a high score feedback. Does that mean all the other garages here are really bad?! :p

I will bookmark that website for future reference! Cheers. :)

Screwage. They quoted me between £600 and £700 quid for the headgasket. Arrgh what to do?
Shall I tell them I did my research and they only cost £400?

Right. Just been on the phone to the Fiat garage, they say between £425 and £450. That's good enough for me. It might be 30 miles away but I'm sure I'll find a way of getting it there. Don't think I've got much of a choice. It's that or pay the £600-£700 quid Nationwide quoted me.

I personally know which I'd rather choose.

I'm hoping to get it towed. Would my breakdown company tow it? Or does it have to physically breakdown?
I'm getting it back in about half an hour from the Nationwide garage - not paying their prices.

:p Just ordered a new headgasket for a lot cheaper (a two digit figure!) than garages have quoted and have booked it into a local garage that was recommended to me.

He was asking me questions about it leaking and that it might need more parts and a head set and skimming etc, but Nationwide Autocentre said none of the other parts have gone, it just looks like the headgasket.
He didn't quote me as he wasn't too sure on what needed doing until he sees the vehicle. I don't think he's done a Punto before, but anyway it's worth a shot.

How big is the headgasket? and how heavy is it? I'm intending to simply plonk it in the boot and then drive it to this garage I've been recommended on Monday.

Ah fantastic, I'm not good when it comes to engines, I'm no mechanic! I would give things a go myself if I had the first clue what I was doing, lol.

So as you know my headgasket is due to be done this week. Is there anything I should ask the mechanic to do...

like skim the head, replace thermostat, anything else the mechanic should do? He said he'd not done a Punto before so I want to make sure he's aware of what he's doing - even if it should be the other way round!!! I'm sure there are others at his garage who have done Punto's before.

Just want to know exactly what has to be done in addition to a new head gasket.

Just confirm with him that he will have it skimmed, and that he checks the cylinder head, piston rings etc for warping or cracks etc. He should know what to do anyways if he's ever done any head gasket before

Well he has had the car since Monday but don't think he was going to do anything with it until tomorrow. Hopefully he will ring and I will be able to confirm those few things.

Only thing worrying me now of course, is the price of this job. If more starts going wrong with it or he finds more problems and this ends up becoming a more expensive job, it might be goodbye Punto. :(
