General TwinAir Thread (including MPG)

Well, this will be my last post regarding fuel consumption as the car has now been sold. Not due for a fillup so I will just use the average MPG over the whole 823 miles the car covered whilst under my ownership.

When I left my house to go and collect the new car the Trip B average was 37.2mpg and when I got to the dealers it had improved to 37.5MPG. Still pretty low but showing signs of improvement, however, the driving experience was dire.

The shift indicator was telling me to change up at under 30MPH and then when I did and it started to labour it then ordered me to downshift, lol.

Hope all you other owners fare better and I'm sure that if rallycinq ever gets his car we should see some true figures. I'm particularly interested in his comments as we both previously had the 1.3MJT so any comparisons will be read with interest.

even though many publications share your MPG experience, ALL of them are full of praise for the twin air engine performance./drive. What made it so poor (dire) for you?

Not everything is about having the faster model of car :) Plus Grimwau's wife seems to be very particular :)

yeah i never said it was you just presumed that ;) i like everything about the abarth from its engine to its looks and interior :) they are way out of my price range though on price, insurance costs and tax costs haha

Good choice Grimwau. The way i see it is like this, both the Twin air and the Abarth T-jet are turbocharged, it seems the "real world" MPG figures are quite similar, and given that, you're annual fuel bill isn't going to be much higher. So you've got more power but without compromising the economy, good choice i'd say (y)

And just to let you know, done a 400 mile trip to Bristol and back this weekend, 37.8 MPG for the entire trip (including some 90+ MPH stints on the motorway) and on the way back this afternoon i got a shocking 44 MPG! Trust me, even if you sacrifice a little economy, it's worth it in the Abarth! :)

I wish I hadn't just read that, as 45mpg "real world" is the cut point for the cars to replce my current 500. Abarth 500 now back on the (ever shortening) list.

Just remember he's talking about trip computer MPG which could be anything up to 10% out.

does twinair has the same ride height as others? i saw some pictures here, it looks a lot higher than my 1.4 sport. i hope they didn't resolved the stiffness that way.

Nothing really to tell that I haven't alluded to previously. As I have said all along it is the driving experience that is the most important aspect to me of owning a car and the 1.3MJT and the Abarth both fulfilled that in my case.

I still consider that the TwinAir is a brilliant concept and it would appear from all the opinions expressed, both here and in the media that the fuel consumption is the only aspect that has been singled out as being a negative.

If I had bought the car for myself then I would have persevered but although Mrs Grimwau said she would try to get used to it I didn't think that was fair and after she drove the Abarth I could tell that she was happy again, lol. :worship:

Hi Fiat fans, just given the 16 year old owned from new 75SX Punto the heave and ordered a new 500 Twin air sport, with a few bells and whistles! got to wait 6 weeks though. have registered on Fuelly have read the above to add to the data.
