Tuning turbo time!

pfffff... 4week old head gasket gone byebye:bang:

Genuine head bolts and gasket? I blew mine the first time around because i used FAI parts to save money. When pulling the head, the bolts seemed stretched.

Used genuine parts the 2nd time with about 5 degrees more angle on the head bolts, and it has been fine ever since.

yeh 7quid gasket :) looks like its faulty to me but ive used them loads before without a problem. oh well ...

It was funny it just went while i was in traffic and moved forward
it blew between 1 and 2. at first it sounded like the bottom end had gone (loud knocking sound when ever you put load on the engine and smoked like a train)

getting there:)
fitting locating pins into the intake side of the head and matched the ports, they where MILES out. the top of the port was to low and actually protruded into the injectors path (most likely not enough to catch fuel but cant be good).

noticed a little restriction in the 899bob ... well not the bob but the design of the throttle body top.

new valve steam seals.
cut valves back in/reshimmed.
everything cleaned. :)

things i want to do... (* = NEED to do)
derestrict the steering. the rack spacers to stop the wheel hitting the box is making the turning circle useless (n) needs to be done before next event*

rewire engine bay. its getting messy.

finish wiring in launch control and flat shift

find a way of getting air into the car that does not come from the engine bay or suck in rain water *

get boost pipes made from bent metal. to many connections and 90s on the silicone hoses. and they are starting to look worn (n)

Have the same exact bob (and hence the restriction) on mine and also way toooo much silicone under the bonnet. Thinking exactly the same way you do ;)

About the restriction. Now I realized that having the bob flipped to the other side of the bay inhibits proper air flow. That is, the bob inlet is not on the same "level" as tb inlet, the air needs to make bend...

Question about the extra air temp. sensor on the side of the bob. Why? (I can guess, because I also have certain problems with the one in tb, but need to know your unbiased statement ;)).

the extra sensor is for my intercooler fan :)

Interesting ;) The problem I am having is that when I start the engine really warm, but after it rested for more than 20 minutes, the air temperature sensor shows crazy temperatures (70 and above) and that messes up my fueling. It takes it a while to cool down too. In other words it should be placed IMO in a place less prone to "unjustified" air heating...

EDIT: remind me, you do have the Van Aaken IC, don't you. Did you leave the charcoal canister where it was? Cause I am thinking where the heck did you manage to mount the fan on the IC...

nah charcoal canister went years ago.
The fan is from a motorcycle (ducati if i remember)
fitted perfectly.

Sorry for dragging your tongue (not sure if that's a proper English phrase) ;) Please explain when/how/why/etc do you need a fan on the IC? When driving full speed it should get plenty of air the same way as the radiator does, when stationary why care so much about air temp?

yes even my car does that. I just blip the throttle after you start it and the sensor cools down right away.

This is comforting, because I found it unusual and so far could not confirm this behaviour in others peoples cars. I fixed it slightly by modifying Air Temperature fuel correction maps.

fun??? yeh right. im just wanted the new engine as another spare but it turned out tooooo nice to sit around collecting dust. and the faulty head gasket made me decide.
also i needed to sort the steering (not done many events this year due to poor lock) and its much much easier to sort without a engine in the way.

trying to do everything perfect this time.

nice painted engine.
tidy wiring.
fix all leaks
hybrid turbo with a volvo turbo nearly like fordcosworths (jasons) but keeping the GT15 turbine/housing but fitted with the gt17 (52) compressor/housing. also want to fit a watercooled core to help reliability a bit.
wont be as uber powerful as jasons turbo but should flow a LOT more at high rpms and not strain the turbo as much (high air temps) and I REALLY hope it wont lag to much. (GT15 has almost no lag)

16valve pistons but head skimmed to bring the compression back up (16valve pistons alone are tooooo low but are a perfect design for low compression turbo pistons)
