Technical Turbo Panda Project

Technical Turbo Panda Project

Ahh had some ups and downs today.

Had to fiddle with the pickup ring sensor for the ECU as it was a little too far over and wouldn't sense movement so had no spark.

Anyway, sorted that and - it started!!!!!!!!

It idled quite nicely, but was very noisy due to having an open downpipe.

Oil pressure settled at 52 psi. That was with cold 15w/40 mineral oil.

Then I realised that the idiots who had made my oil cooler lines hadn't properly swaged the ends onto the fittings! Oil was pissing out everywhere!!!!

I was thoroughly annoyed by this point and have given up untill tomorrow.

Fun fun fun!

Very nice. Congratulations on the first start. Sounds very successful to me, considering all the possibles! Ridiculous situation with the oil lines though; you definitely didn't deserve that!

sounds like you already had an oil cooler spray kit;) Glad it's all working and hopefully oil tight now anyway. Home straight now then?

hahahahahahah! Home straight I wish :)

Realistically though, the next big obstacle is making an exhaust.

With an open exhaust you can't really hear the engine and find out if you have any bad noises. I also need to let the engine get up to some kind of decent temperature to do a proper leak check of water systems.

A quick look-around last night says that the coolant system isn't circulating like it should be so that needs a rethink also.

Had what can only be desribed as a hilarious near miss too! I'd just put some petrol in the tank and me and a few others had gathered around the engine bay to watch the system prime. We were watching the fuel filter fill up when all of a sudden fuel started squirting out of the pressure regulator, inbetween the rubber membranes, at full pressure! There was like a bloody 3 BAR petrol fountain in the garden! hahaha!

I hadn't touched the pressure reguator....can only blame the previous owners for the accident! hahaha :p just kidding :)

So yeah, top tip, after you've checked everything - check the things you missed!

Anyway....Exhaust next, then get it run up to temperature. Finances may not allow this for a few weeks though as I'm off to France :(

Just gotta take it step by step!

Thanks! :)

Having a bit of a break atm whilst I'm off to France. Just spent practically the whole weekend putting a VW Beetle project on ebay whilst the free listing weekend was on.

Would have cost over £200 just in listing fee's without it being free!

Anyway, the money from that is paying for a side exit exhaust on the Panda lol

Hello all :)

Contrary to popular belief, I haven't died. The Panda is still taking shape! I'll get a few photo's up later.

Was away at the weekend, had a very strange letter come through the door from our friends at HMRC, DVLA, Environmental Agencies and the police (yes, there were that many names on it)

Anyway if you remember my 1988 1000 Supa Panda, I sold it (well swapped it) for the 16v engine that I had in my Red panda, well I think that the guys I sold it to either cloned the registration or didn't send the new ownership off and it was involved in a fatal hit & run aswell as 4 armed robberies.

Fantastic!

Now i've got to go to court.

That aside, Panda's are still awesome (y) Just make sure you dont let untrustworthy people send the V5 log book off for you!

Glad to hear you are alive and the project is still underway. I've come close to posting in this thread to check! That story about your Super is nuts. Hope that doesn't cause you any more problems than the formalities.

At the time I was 18 so I didn't have a great deal of knowledge in car sales, but the guys at the car breakers who I sold the Panda to, they filled in the top right of the V5 which is something like 'Notification of sale/transfer to the motor trade' and they said to me they'd send the V5 off as they apparently sent like 10 a week - if I wanted them to.

Now obviously I was like 'ermmm...yeah okay' since I didn't know WTF they were talking about and due to the giant car breakers I was in I figured they weren't exactly dodgy.

I'm guessing they never sent the V5 off, then either used the Panda or kept it legal so they could clone the numberplate for other things.

When the letter came I burst out laughing. It read something like 'Please create a portfolio of evidence by September the 3rd. Any reciepts, invoices or proof of sale will be useful.'

I don't have any paperwork, no reciepts and it was 2 years ago!

I'm sure it will be fine though :)

HELLO!

My god. Feels like centuries since I've been on here!

Well I'd like to say that the Panda is still here :) Had a very long break on it, been busy sorting my life out in the job department and digging a pit in the garage to make life easier for myself.

How is everyone?
