Thought i would d post a new thread here re my panda classic engine swap.
The uno engine does not have the drilling for a mechanical petrol pump. So i fitted electric 12 volt one,
All new off ebay
In fact THREE pumps, all failed.
I realised it was because they DO NOT STOP PUMPING, I thought they would like the old style SU pumps but not i am afraid.
Tried with return on and blanked off, still. Same. Pump needs to stop or they burn out quick.
So my question is has anyone else had similar issues with engine swaps or any advice please
Fiat uno 1.1 fire engine, runs perfectly.
Just gotta sort the fuel pump.
1990 Panda
Any advice much appreciated.
Cheers

Your problem is with the pumps, as they should sense the fuel isn't being used.

Early Fiat engines used weber Marianelli carbs or their equivalent.
Most of the Fire engines had electric pumps?

So don't know the history of yours. I.e. how old is it?
Is it from a 127 or 128 perhaps, as they had fuel pumps that ran off the cam.If it's a pre 1981 engine.

A pump on block (my long list of Ohv 903cc Fiats) all had engine pumps.

And my last one was a 1991 J reg.

Any Fiat I had that was a Fire engine 999 - had a electric pump. As the engine was robotised with electric ignition and carbs (mostly) with electric chokes and Fuel sensors.

After 1989 most fire engines became injected. A Petrol injected, bowl carb type arrangement. That carried well on to the Punto 55 & 60s 1124cc, 1242cc Ohc 8v engine.

But have to look out my manuals.

The original fire fiat panda engine had mechanical pump on cylinder head, driven by cam shaft. The uno engine i have fitted does not have the drilling for the pump push rod or tapping holes.
Yeah
You are right its the type of pump i need one that senses pressure and turns off, thats the problem cannot find one,

I need e a pump that stop pumping when it gets to pressure at carb
Somebody must have done it before?

Thing is it will have to be quite low pressure around 4 psi I should imagine to prevent the pressure overcoming the needle valve in float chamber and carb flooding, unlike petrol injection pressure of around 45psi roughly.:)

How bad was the old engine? Cylinder heads are interchangeable if you still have the old one with the fitting for the mechanical pump. Limiting factor would be camshaft. Ideally swap in the newer 1108 one - although it may no longer have the cam profile to drive the pump depending on age. If you've got a 4x4 cam in the old head you should be fine. Standard 999 cam it'll run OK but be a touch down on power.
