Got round to looking at this properly today while also checking the DRL (warning on dash) and glow plugs (ditto). Both those were all ok
Looking at the trim piece on the other side (still in place) it appears the plastic pegs on the trim part are simply melted and rounded over to hold them in the fixing holes on the bumper. Certainly no sign of anything like a star clip, although there might be a plastic washer there too? Looking more closely at the side the trim had come away from, there were indeed little melted bits of the black trim left in the holes of my green bumper.
Then it rained again, so it can all wait a bit longer.
The photo probably doesn’t help much but are best I could get of the other side still in situ.
