Trepiuno engines confirmed?

Why all the negative replies? A small turbo like that is perfect for a car like this, I recon darting in and out of traffic at real life speeds (not over 70), it'll out perform big turbo engines as it'll be VERY torquey at low speeds. And 110bhp in a small car like that'll be mega fun :slayer:

This engine is going into the 500 around 2009-2010. It will be state of the art. Think more motorbike then old aircooled 500. It will generate good power and fantastic fuel economy. Expect upto 100mpg!!!!!
Before then, we will have the Tjet engine rated upto 150bhp and the award winning multi jet diesel 1.3 engine.

At the end of the day, its revisiting the glory of the origional 500, and that had a tiny engine, so this one has one too but with modern attributes and technology.
I think its a good plan personally :) its not supposed to be taking on the Cooper S or anything, its a small town car (y)
anyway if they whack a big engine in it to start with, where's the fun gonna be with the first engine conversion? :p

The Abarth 150 will be aimed at taking Mini Cooper sales. And it will be more then good enough to succeed. I think the whole range will sell out at launch and do a BMW Mini and have a waiting list, so resale value will be strong.

:yeahthat: its going to be aimed at competing with the mini not its sister car the f**d ka

Italiaspeed have a source that's saying Fiat are bringing forward the release from Sept 15th to July 4th!

If the 2 cylinder engines aren't available at launch I wonder what will be. Presumably the 1.3 MJTD, but would the new 1.4's from the Bravo fit to take on the Mini Cooper? The 2 cyliner engines sound interesting, but what will they actually be like. When I drove a 3 cylinder 1.2 Polo I disliked the uneven idle shaking the car (and the general unrefinement, but I guess that's a basic VW thing), but having only 2 cyliners should give it a more normal idle, and characteristic noise.

As previous mentioned, it will have the 1.3 multi jet diesel, and two versions of the 1.4 TJet. 120bhp and 150bhp. The 2 cylinder is under development and is 2-3 years away from production.

dream on! the mini is in a completely different market. thats like saying the new bravo will compete with the 1 series. there's no chance.

Rubbish Jug. Its a fashion thing. People want the "in" thing and remember the original Mini in the 1960's had all the stars buying it, because it was chic and the thing to do. Same with the current Mini. everyone wanted one, yet the car is not that great. It has poor interior space and a laughable boot. But mainly women buy them because its the fashion to do so. The Estate agents are nobody unless they drive one!! This will happen with the 500, it will take off, and Mini sales will suffer, because its yesterday's news. I see everyone from Joe Blog in the street, to Celebs buying one!!! the car will be the savior of Fiat, as it will be a worldwide hit. I bet it will be car of the year too. Its that good!!

Like a three legged horse there`s a pitching,
attempt a gallop and you`re goin to to be retching

Now a horse with 2 legs, diagonally opposed
on a trim body, thats fully enclosed,
Needs less oats in the belly and in the stable,
he`s easier to keep than your Auntie Mabel.

But he shudders and shakes as though on the beer,
as he prods his back leg into first gear.
he gets into a strop, as his two legs clop,
A wheeze and some snot, and down he does drop.

But he`s new to the world of developing things
and an angel comes and gives him some wings
now on cloud 9 he can sometimes be heard
with a pop bang and whistle he`s one of the herd.:D

The Citroen flat twin was a brilliant little motor.

The Fiat will likely be a V2, as it's going to be the base part of a new modular engine, ranging up to a V6. It'll probably be pretty thrummy, but will have decent balancers incorporated. It won't drive like a 4, or a 6; it'll be different, and probably excitingly different at that, and I bet it's going to be rorty, and fun, and economical:)

Yes I agree, I had a 2cv and always appreciated the gear driven camshaft.

This sounds like the most exciting engine layout for small cars in years, I wonder how they will drive the camshaft/s. If it were a pushrod job, it could be helical gear driven in the base of the V, Hope they don`t run cambelts on an interference engine up to the heads of a V twin.
How about a short stroke engine and special metal pushrods to keep the reciprocating weight (of the pushrods) down and a helical gear driven camshaft in the base of the V between the cylinders and hydraulic tappets?
Hope Fiat are also keeping to the philosophy of the Multijet with only oil and filters to be changed over its lifespan.
I suspect that even a modern short stroke pushrod engine that would allow the best camshaft solution will not rev high enough though, however IMHO this engine will be defined by the safety of its camshaft drive.
Belts and interference engines are no longer acceptable in new engine design.
Regards

Why do you need camshafts? All they do is open and close the valves to time. BMW and Lotus amongst others have been experimenting with electronic magnets to open and close the valves. This basically allows unlimited valve timing, the ability to close cylinders down. So at the flick of a switch, you could have a very economical engine, or at the other end, a race engine with high lift valves!! This would make a very light, compact engine that would be very low maintenance. Throw in a heated plenum like on areoplanes to heat up a very weak mixture say upto 50-1 air/fuel mixture, and you would have an engine capable of over 200mpg!!
