New Fiat 500 hybrid: why the 2025 version is a bit disappointing compared to the old...
When
Fiat presented the new generation of its 500 in 2020, the manufacturer was clear: this city car would enter the electric era, and
there was absolutely no question of a hybrid version.
Promised and sworn.
But the reality of the market decided otherwise.
Faced with
the collapse in the sale of the electric 500 100% Fiat, it has had to reconsider its plans.
In 2024, the former CEO of Stellantis will
finally announce the arrival of a 500 hybrid based on the new STLA City platform.
We are now in September 2025 and
the first technical details of this Fiat 500 hybrid are now known.
At first glance, this seems like a good thing: he was made in Italy, with an Italian motorcycle, which sounds like a return to his roots and finally some work for Italian workers.
But on closer inspection, the specification sheet comes as a surprise ... and not in a good way.
And the most amazing thing is somewhere else: its CO2 emissions.
While the previous generation emitted between 119 and 128 g/km, the new one reaches 120 g/km.
The same applies to fuel consumption, which has not been improved.
Technical choices that raise questions
Why such a decline?
Probably because of the new Fiat 500 platform,
heavier than the old emission standards.
It is quite possible that Fiat had to limit the engine to stay below the emission standards.
The problem is that the result is a city car that is heavier, less efficient and, paradoxically, consumes more fuel.
It's an even more distressing paradox when you think back to the 500 TwinAir, which was offered ten years ago.
The 85 hp two-cylinder with turbocharged 145 Nm of torque and only 92 g/km of CO2.
The 0 to 100 was announced in 11 seconds.
Fiat did not hesitate at the time to describe the 500 as the "world champion in ecology".
A new 500 hybrid with everything to prove
Fiat is counting on this new hybrid version to revive the career of the 500 with combustion engine, but the gamble seems risky.
On paper, it seems difficult to defend launching a city car in 2025 that is less efficient than the previous generation.
Of course, there are also positive points, such as that the car is safer and technologically more advanced than its predecessor.
Finally, if customers come to the dealer to try out the 500 hybrid, they might be tempted to leave... with the electric version.
