I also agree with jip0, ditch Vista asap, XP might not like some of the newer hardware in the Alienware though. You should be able to pick up a Vista > Win7 upgrade fairly cheap I'd have thought.
Having never paid for Windows I've no idea ...

im not sure if this one will be able to run 7 well.

its 3Gb (4Gb installed but for some reason it can only see 3GB), Duel Core Athlon 4200+

Suitable?

Really? I thought the max for 32bit was 4GB?

Quote from Gigabyte website;

Due to Windows 32-bit operating system limitation, when more than 4 GB of physical memory is installed, the actual memory size displayed will be less than 4 GB.

so your right, it should show 4gb maximum

Yeah I don't know where you got this from, both of our systems are on 32-bit and both have 4GB memory.

You say that.. but mine says on 2.99gb is useable :(

I know it'll never say exactly 4GB as obviously windows, etc will all be loaded into part of it but ...

Edit: Right, just looked this up, 32-bit windows can address up to 4GB but onboard VGA (even if not in use) often uses some of this. Anymore than 4GB will require 64-bit :)

as for running 7, a general rule if it can run vista it will run 7 better.

there is a windows 7 upgrade advisor that you can download and run which will tell you if your machine is suitable

Will take a look! How much would the upgrade to 7 roughly cost if the adviser shows it to be fine
