just got one of my mates to lower my car for me, i dont have alloys yet, do u think ill be ok lowering it 40mm with only my normal 14" wheels or should i wait for the alloys?

40mm seems a little low for me...

You will be ok to lower it, as it will lower the center of gravity, and give you slightly better handling.

You may be better off waiting for your Alloys, just in case 40 is too much of a drop. (when i say too much, i mean as you go round corners will the wheels rub?)

I'm sure someone will give you better advice, and correct me on my mistakes...lol :)

Re: Re: to lower or not to lower, that is the question

40 mm is low, but not impossible. I've had my car lowered 40 mm. It handels real smooth round corners. The only problem is when you have low side skirts like me (abarth ones) you better not race over speedbumps. Or "verkeersdrempels" like we call em here. Same goes for the front bumper. Too often I need to switch to first gear to get over them.
But hey, it looks cool. :) And maybe England is not that speedbump infected yet, as Holland is...

Putting alloys on when your lower your car makes it scuff.

You can lower your car pretty much any amount with standard wheels and it should not scuff. Putting bigger alloys on may make it scuff.

I lowered the back of my zx 80mm and it didn't scuff one bit - front about 60mm.

Re: Re: Re: Re: to lower or not to lower, that is the question

Mines lowered 40mm alround (My cars under 20V in the fiat boo club page if ya wanna look - Its the best option - Never have any probs rubbing even with a full car of people.

But im on 17's so im not sure how it'll handle with 14's on.

oh... and you can lower down to 50mm before having to roll the arches - I think Rob.D's Car is 50mm???

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: to lower or not to lower, that is the question

Yeah it will be fine bud

if you've got skirts defusers etc dont do it get your wheels on first. If the cars standard it will be fine to lower as it is

mines lowered 40mm but it would go to 50mm with out too much hassle and the rear end is about an 40-50mm from the floor as it is

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: to lower or not to lower, that is the question

why would having smaller wheels cause any problems?

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: to lower or not to lower, that is the question

nice one guys cheers for the info!

i thought that maybe with getting lowered 40mm with my standard wheels on might be too low, eg, exhuast, skirts, bumpers may catch on the floor over bumps, especially speed bumps. the whole idea for me is to get alloys, but i have my PI springs in a wardrobe collecting dust, so i thought why not get them on now. just needed advice,

so cheers again ppl

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: to lower or not to lower, that is the question

bang them on. speed bumps may cause you trouble but just avoid them. like i say having small wheels and a low car means that you will get no scuffage.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: to lower or not to lower, that is the question

lowering it...........

is £60 off a good mate good that works in a garage about right?

im actually getting it done for free off another mate, i just wanna no if my mate that quoted £60 as a good will guesture is actually a good price,

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: to lower or not to lower, that is the question

60 pounds for a one hour job? Did you replace springs only, or dampers as well?

Mine cost me 25 pounds for spring replacement.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: to lower or not to lower, that is the question

just the springs! i thought £60 was a f*cking rip off, and to think... he was doing this as a FAVOUR, lol. at least my other mate who used to work in kwick fit will do it for nothing, ill have to buy him a few pints sod the £60 palarvour

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: to lower or not to lower, that is the question

im planning on getting some 40mm all round, wich will cost about 100 quid, and i was quoted from 2 different garrages £120 for fitting. is that bad?

1 hour job to fit 4 springs - with how many hands!!

£60 sounds like a good deal.
