Technical Timing Belt and water pump

I believe its time for my little punto to have her timing belt and water pumped changed. I got a couple of quotes from a few garages but the cheapest quote i got was £400!!! Is this the going rate???
Im not an expert but how hard would it be to do this myself??

ask what their labour charges are
in fact dont darken their door again at 400 notes

they are having a laugh! belt, tensioner + pump on an 8v should be less than half that

Your talking about £52 for parts from shop4parts, then about 2 hours to do it yourself.

Water pump - £22
Timing belt kit - £30

Its fairly easy to DIY it, plus you cant do any damage if you mess up the timing.

If you have a trolley Jack + Stands
Some Spanners and an afternoon

You can do the Belt easy peasy
The Cooling system only adds an hour max really

your getting ripped off, here on the Wirral i can get a timing belt kit for £12. for the 1.2 8v

Tbh the make of the belt isn't really a problem for the punto 8v's

As if a cheap belt was used and it snapped - the engine isn't going to mash itself like others
gotta love non-interferance engines

If it lasts to its next change then i wouldnt worry at all

I got the tensioner and belt, sorry i can not remember what make the belt is

Belt can be had from £8 to about £15 for a powergrip one.
Water pump should be £25.
Coolant (to replace as winter's coming) is £10.
If not done recently should replace tensioner bearing whilst doing belt (£10).

It can be done in 2 hours if you know exactly what you're doing and don't have to refer to a manual. Budget 5 hours if not done before, as a rough guess.

I'd do it for £120 inc parts if you're local to West London. Obviously this doesn't come with a guarantee etc like a garage would, but would be saving £100 from the cheapest garage. I'd suggest doing it yourself though, you can't break the 8v engine.
