General Thinking of buying a Stilo!

in an ideal world that would be fab :slayer:
iv heard quite a lot of praise for that engine

BUT, 20 + 0 no claims + IG 7 = quite a fancy figure

im already insuring the stilo for third party fire and theft only. and thats £754 with Quinn-Direct. that will be changing tho next year, once the comprehensive cover quotes become more realistic.

what il probably end up doing is going through a couple of stilos till i buy an abarth then keep that for a long long time (maybe even as a weekend car).

come on guys, gimme a shout when you spot a nice 3dr for sale with the criteria i mentioned before (y)

hi i know that you are undecided about a 1.6 but check this one out on e-bay item number 260077014923

Give me the 1.6 any day and I'm not saying that cos I got one great engine and even better when its been worked on a little  mine is running at 120bhp and you can tell the differanc from the 103bhp as standard ..as you are doing more town milage as well you wont really see the benefit of the jtd also it requirers more service maintainance and fuel is also dearer there was a nice blue one at yapps in Fidlas road it is a 1.4 and 95bhp and £6999 on a 06 plate and very clean :) Oh hang on though damn it its a 5 dr :D :slayer:

hi im from wales too when i was looking for my stilo i tried the london area as i found used car prices were generally lower anyway picked up my 53 plate multi wagon jtd 14,000 miles on the clock for £5000 from glyn hopkin east ham anyway good luck mate hope you find a jtd for the cash you got

had a look at that one on ebay phill, but i just dont warm up to it, speedy 103bhp engine, lowered... makes me feel that its seen some rough days, besides, its a 1.6 and no skyroof.

i was just having a read of the autotrader review on the new kia ceed, iv had the one before it - cerato - for a month, and its 1.6 engine was pants, sooooo slow in both acceleration and top speed, it just felt really stangled, like it could do so much better, plus it wasnt too economical. but the new ceed's 1.6 engine is 122bhp 154lb/ft and 44mpg average  just shows you how old and dated the stilo's 1.6 is.

HOWEVER, i seem to have fallen in love with fisel's stilo which is on sale in the classifides section, even though its a 1.6 :bang:

off topic, PNL, have you see how many 5drs have started to pop up in cardiff! i rarely used to spot one now theyre everywhere!

They have finally started to see sense, and gone for the 5dr!! (y)

(bring on the backlash of posts from 3dr owners!!!)

If you only have £3500 and are looking for a "bargain" then it is highly probable you will buy a car that needs £1000 worth of work on it within the first 12 months. Can you afford this?

You should randomly pick a thread from the Technical section and assume your car will have that problem. Buying a second hand Stilo goes hand in hand with inheirting a problem or 6.

Boring advice but I speak from experience and wish I had used my brain and not my heart 10 months ago when I paid £4500 for mine :(

im not looking for a 'bargin', £3500 is plenty for a 4-5 year old car, my dad got his Nissan Primera Sport+ 2.0 W reg 2 years ago with climate control, alloys, and full electrics in metallic silver for £1800, and it only had 50K on it, and its one of the best cars i have ever driven, last time i was on the 'my private test track' i was cruising at 135 in comfort, and dynamically its streets ahead of anything in its class, even the hatches (ford focus). but thats not the point, point is you can get a lot of car for not a lot of money if you look properly and have some patience.

i feel deeply for the problems you have had with the stilo, but regarding the technical section, ppl only post a question when something goes wrong, and no one would really post a praise or something when the car is fine.

all cars have their problems, some more than others, some easily fixed, some arent, and most on the stilo are easy.

as i mentioned, a merc S500 was a pain in the backside, and that cost a SH**LOAD of money eveytime it went into the garage, and i think everyone highly regard mercs or any other german mark for that matter.

im sure if you spent a little time properly fixing the problems with your stilo you'll love it (y)

Try looking on autotrader.co.uk and use the post code cm24 1sb (my work post code)
There are tons of Stilo's around my neck of the woods starting at£2500.

hello everyone, i have finally joined your fantastic forum after about a year of DAILY browsing. you see, i just didnt want to join before i actually had a stilo, thought of it being rather pointless otherwise.
iv been a stilo owner wannabe for nearly two years now, i dont care if it breaks down every week, i just love it to bits for all its good and bad, because its got one thing almost all cars miss out on, and thats character. im sure all you guys appreciate that too :slayer:

round about june last year everything seemed set to buy me a stilo, so i went hunting for one, and i stumbled upon an advert for a fiat dealer in scunthorpe that they were doing an interest free finance option with no deposit for a limited time only on all their used cars. not believeing myself i went all the way up there (6 hours driving!) and spent an hour choosing the car i liked, it was an 04 stilo 1.4 3 door sporting (i know theres no such trim, but dealer said they added the 17" claws and the cd changer on top of the active trim so they gave it a sporty tag that was soft on the insurance) with 14000 miles on the clock for £6250. then i took the stilo for a 45 min test drive, and it was fantastic, really for a 1.4 it was better than my mates 1.6 mk5 golf, it pulls in every gear, even 6th! (y)

anyways after decisions were made we sat down to do all the paperwork, and thats when i found out that the finance deal was a big fat lie, the manager then had a bit of sympathy for me driving all the way there from cardiff said that i can have 0% finance if i paid a deposit of £4250!!!! and in all honest that on its own would have bought me a nice stilo. to say i was fuming is an understatement :bang:

anyways, enough of the storytelling, i need your help everyone to find me a nice stilo.

now my budget has dropped a bit to a max of £3500. i know its not much, but a bit of searching the interweb showed me that i can still get something nice.

i really want a JTD, but i think a decent one would be out of my budget. i dont want a 1.6, so i guess its either a 1.4 or 1.2

now i know how the 1.4 drives, but could someone with a 1.2 plz tell me what its like, im a bit wary of the small engine big car theme there.

now my preferences in ORDER ;) :

1) Skyroof
2) Yellow, if not then BlackBerry (that dark purple colour), if not then black, then anything other than non metallic red :yuck:

oh, and it has to be a 3 door

so if anyone has one that fit my needs, or has seen anyone then gimme a shout plz, then i would really be part of the stilo massive:slayer:

thanks everyone, and sorry bout the long post:)

Why don't you like the 1.6? The tests said it was the pick of the petrols and that the 1.2 is gutless. I run a 1.6 and it's fine - pulls strongly and makes a nice noise somehow. But I'm not selling... not for 3.5 anyway!:)

J, I know it's not your opinion, but the 1.2 is hardly what I'd call gutless. It pulls better than other turbo diesels I've driven with work (ford, pug) and it's keeps me more than happy to cane round the back roads of dorset. For the power to weight it's got more than adequate grunt. I test drove a 1.6 5 door, and it was aweful by comparison. The 1.2 is a very serious choice if you've got your heart set on a stilo but price and insurance costs are a factor like they were for me. I'm 22 and only had 1 years NCB at last renewal. My 1.2 costs £380 a year 3PFaT through Quinn direct. Not mega cheap, but still a hell of a lot less than the larger models.

I had a 1.2 as a loan car when we had the Brava and was looking at getting a Stilo; it was fine. I'm a big guy and it pulled me and my dad up hills ok, the only point I noticed it was going up hills on the motorway.

I used to own a Brava 80SX Formula (in fact it was my first car); now that shifted!

The 1.2 is a great engine, don't dismiss it.

Sounds like an absolute steal to me - I'd grab it quick (y)

You'll need to make sure cam belt has been changed (or allow for the expense) and other usual checks you should make before buying any motor.

Try to get a local warranty as you don't want a 200 mile trip for problems.

....and make sure it's a 115 bhp

grab it i did not (n)

gone

spoke to the guy, who was very nice, got it down to £2800 on the phone for me to pick it up on sat. he agreed that because id be travelling a lot, he would hold it for me if i was definately coming. i couldnt get there on sat or sun, rang today and it was gone.

it was perfect in every way, spec, price, skyroof, jtd, 115bhp.

so im on the lookout again
