Temp' gauge reading

I was wondering if anyone could tell me what the usual position for the temp gauge needle should be when the car is warmed up? Mine never seems to rise over quarter.

Your thermostat needs replaced. It should sit quite close to halfway.
I imagine when you are at idle it reaches halfway then the fan will kick in, and it will go no higher?

Whats happened is the thermostat is like a valve that opens at a certain temperature. Yours, like so many, has jammed partly, or fully open.

shop4parts has them, and its a fairly straightforard DIY job to replace it.

Ouch! I have a 1.6 16v so it's pretty expensive. What happened to the thermostat being cheap? I was expecting the price to be about a tenner.
Ah well, no use whinging, thanks for the help Buzz, much appreciated mate ;)

Or, if you are really worried about doing it yourself, buy the part and take to a local independent garage. They should charge you about an hours labour. I suggest you renew your coolant at the same time, because i dont think you should re-use old coolant, and its under a tenner for new coolant and a couple of litres of de-ionised water )
A good garage should charge 2 hours labour for ALl of this.

personally, i think anyone with a Haynes should be able to replace the thermostat and coolant, and it makes the whole job under £40 instead of over £100 at a garage

What year is your bravo?
That one is for 98 or before, the following is 98 or after

Thermostat
1.6 16v (04/1998-> With Returnless Fuel System)
Part Number: S4P1384
Our Price: £30.11

Hope that helps.

and defo DIY.

you will probably find it heats up a lot quicker with the new one on, which is good for the engine, and it will hold temp nearer to the halfway mark. Also, your fuel economy should improve slightly, though maybe not enough to notice in the short term. (i wouldn't notice 1 or 2 mpg)

Ok Buzz, i'll have a word with my father (was a mechanic on fred flintstone's car lol) doesn't know alot about modern cars but should be able to answer any questions that come up during the fitting.

Quick question. Would a jammed thermostat cause the car to kangaroo when cold at low revs and the injector light to come on?

no. it will probably affect your emissions, and fuel consumption etc, but wont cause kangarooing.
Thats most likely to be duff sparks or leads i'd imagine. when was it last serviced, oil, air, sparks, and fuel filter changed etc?

It was last serviced in april (by the fiat garage that sold it to us and put it through the mot).
We travelled to a nearby town today (about 35 miles round trip) and the car was sounding more like a tractor than anything else. We did notice that the injector light would go off if the accelerator was released and also that when we finally got up to 60mph (not alot of power in it, very sluggish)occasionaly the light would go off and power would be available again.
We filled the tank today and put more redex in but i'm putting in an order for a thermostat and a fuel filter this evening.
I'll have to wait until the morning to check the leads and the plugs.

bit of advice, when your changing the thermostat, dont let your brother drop a 10mm socket into your bell housing on your gearbox and follow the RAC mans orders of turning the ignition on, therfore spinning the socket round your gearbox before putting a huge crack in it, requiring a new gearbox at the cost of £500!
lol

After putting redex in yesterday we came to start the car today and what do you know? The car has plenty of power and the light's staying off! It must have been a blockage after all.
Really glad i didn't order an injector on Tom's diagnosis lol.

redex does, very little to clear blocked injectors. A tankfull of shell optimax, and a ten quid bottle of Forte' "might" clear it, but in my experience redex will do sod all.
your injector problem will come and go most likely.

If the injector is gone then no amount of additive will fix it. As i understand it the 1.6 injectors have a habit of disintegrating inside and the only cure is a new one. Two went in mine at the same time.

the new replacement injectors from fiat have fixed this prob. Its likely on most 1.6's that the injectors have already been replaced with the new ones. I dont think there was ever a recall for it, but certainly FIAT knew about it, because they revised the injectors that were being used.

Fiat don't make the 1.6 injectors (or any injectors for that matter).

The makers of the injectors hinted to me where was an issue with early ones but fiat have no clue about it.
