i bought a nifty little tester from pound shop as ive always needed one so thought itll come in handy :)..Its lcd display with a a single touch end..similar to a pen..

I went out to test my battery+alt. The battery said 1236v :/ The alternator said 12v.
I then put lights on with full beam, wipers on, stereo on and i got shell to put the windows down so i tested both again and got the same reading :/

I know the voltage of ya car will always give off 12v as thats what the battery gives off But if its lacking power isnt one of them supposed to drop?

A Fiat Marea in a Bravo Shell..Its good to be different ;)
Now with Working steering wheel controls,
FC Performance chip
'Sorted' :)

Mike, did you do the testing with the engine running or not ?
If it was done when the engine was running, you should have read between 12,8 and 14V on the battery not just 12V.

Second when the windows are going down, they dont need much, the upwards motion drains more.

Also during startup of the engine, the voltage on the battery should drop to max 9,5V then go up to 14V.

yeah with the engine running.Just been out again and tested both again and they came back with a reading of 1236v well the alt said 12v :/ Before i did that tho i tested the battery with no ignition on and it just said 12v. (I think the tester aint brill lol)

My alternator has to be on its way out as its the original one,i just wanted to know how bad it is before it starts to kill the battery :/
Cheers Mike

A simple way to see if the alternator is producing a charge is to start the engine, (at night) switch on the headlights, rev the engine slightly, the lights should go brighter if a charge is being produced

Ok, don't wanna question the equipment but...... It was only £1.

Maybe it only reads 1236v??? Lol

The rev and watch lights go bright is a good one, the work van batt is buggered so I have to rev it hard.....that my excuse boss!! :)

Lol @1236v only ha but yeah exactly i just thought its only a pound worth a try :)
Ill try find a pic of the 1 i got. Its got 2 buttons,1 to test the voltage and the other to see where the break is if there is 1.
