T.E.D Pick-up

Introduction

I won't try and convince you that its a perfect donor car and i cant honestly tell you why i've chosen something so old but I think that its something to do with the amount of modern engineering i'll be using to make this car what its going to be. I bought something that has a removeable cab, a T-bar roof conversion and funnily enough for a pick-up, Racing heritage. This car had a tuned MGB engine, (B series obviously) and after that the famous fiat twin camm and thus has alot of the modern mechanicals that some of the lowest spec cars don't have today, anti-roll bar, vented disk brakes, PAS (not from the MGB) and servo assisted brakes. None of that really matters as i've designed a new tubular chassis for the engine that is to go in which will require widening of the vehicle by around a foot and lengthening of the cab and back by about a foot also, which will be taken up in the arches and chassis. Here she is, warning, you WILL laugh

I aquired the vehicle some a little while ago now and chose this basis becasue it wasn't something someone could really restore anymore. I didnt want to waste a decent classic, which i'm sure you can agree, this is no longer. The back will be rebuilt with brushed aluminium rectangular section and the front will be a fixture of carbon fibre and kevlar (but painted).

I'm building this to showcase my side of the companies abilites and it may serve as a work vehicle also. I'll try to keep this as a blog or i'll start an actual blog when i get properly stuck into it.

Over the last couple of days I managed to get some work done on the pick-up. Its not much but its a job i had dreaded but now its done, I can get on with more of it.

Got the anti roll-bar off and the central and lower damper arms out, took ages and I had to recruit my dad in the end and it still took 3 hours after that, Seized to hell (n)

After that I removed the damper pots in the turrets and started coaxing the inner arches out. They weren't the original ones, but ones that were just put in as a requirement for racing I would think. Anyway I didnt want to damage them very much If I could help it, so i used a sledge hammer.

and then theres the nicely preserved inner arches, they came out a treat, and I just had to be very delicate:

Well would like to say I've gotten alot done in the last 3 monhts, but i've barely touched the car, other commitments and other mates cars/bikes etc have taken priority :p

Done a little more recently though, cut the kidney panels out (guess why they're called that) as these can be placed with stock parts:

new vs old:

Aslo cut the back panel off as I'll be using a p100 one if I can find one that isnt rotten, as its wide and stamped. It'll be hidden behind the front of the back section but I may have a tilt back for access to the batterie(s) and the fuel cell.

How it looks now:

I've back new front full dome inner arches orderd but they're on back-order and until they arrive there isnt much to do (n) Hopefully come soonish in the new year

Still no arches (n)

so Just tidied up a bit in the workshop, and moved the recaro's to go in the work van ( escort van with RS turbo lump to go in :yuck: )

Also clamped the side legs of the flipfront to some wood, as they had sagged under its own wight, so while it goes into storage it will slowly be straightening itself out and wont bend anymore.

Hate not having any decent updates :(

Thread resurrection alert!!

Taking ages to source parts at the minute but I managed to track a roof locally (thanks to a mmoc member(y)) So I took a grinder and cut it off lol.

Also got a pristine passener door off a 2-door, an almost mint (lots of surface rust) drivers door and a cab-back panel with no rust:

Started drilling the spot welds out on the front panel to re-attach it as normal fitment but with plugwelds obviously.

Started stripping and preping the doors for the carbon fibre moulds too

I've been busy/lazy recently with a ford orion turbo, when i got round to doing some work on the moggy I got a nasty surprise when i took the drip rail covers off, couple of bug repairs that took some time, still got the spot-weld holes to plug weld as i'm going to run bladed drip rails without covers, means its got to be perfect though

Finally in a position to spend some regular time on the car now work has quietened down, only to find I need another couple panels before I can continue (n)

Got the old roof off with the T-bar piece, puddle welded the holes left from the spot welds on the existing scuttle panel so I have a face to mate the new roof too without hole overlap when puddle welding.

Replacement roof off of the 2 door saloon with extra length on the back - the remainder of the dash has now been removed as has the B pillar pieces with plating over to continue the line of the roof as visible from under the roof/ inside the car looking up into the door recess.

Slight issue

Temporary mock-up

Problem I'm left with now, as you can see, the B pillar is touching the roof and the mating faces are perfectly parrallel. If I pulled them together now then the roof wouldnt be square.

So now I need 2 door A pillars now as well due to the extra length in the doors and roof and because the bottom of these are holed and rusty and I need the correct door geometry too so I'm at another standstill (n)

Started work on the drivers door recently. Smoothing out the bulge and making it easier to make my mould from for the composite doors.

Where I'm at with the filler at the minute
DSC009151.JPG

For ages I've been looking for a set of B pillars. A member on mmoc saw my wanted ad and replied - turns out it was the same member I got the cab back from - top fella too (Thanks Carlo)

DSC009161.JPG

Should sort out the issue I have with getting things lined up properly to fit. Also they're in great condition compared to the 7'' of fibreglass & filler

Hopefully I'll have a door mould finished soon
