change,arc dont like it :p

i have no problem with change, just only when its called for. I'm not at all fussed what happens with the default page because i dont view it, but if anything /forum gets widened then i won't be able to view it nicely on small screens whilst watching telly. I can on every other forum, so why not here? Why not just leave it set up as it is, don't mind vertical scrolling as i'll have to do that anyway - but horizontal sucks of bad page design.

You could say the same about 640x480 users though couldn't you ;)

The front page actually has some useful things - which I guess you never see. People complain about the classifieds not being used, but then if we want to make them more high profile, we need more screen real estate.

The forum has been 780 pixels wide now for 6 years - don't you think it might be time for a change? Or should the wider resolution people suffer to keep the 2% happy.

Or better yet - find a solution to help both parties.... (easiest way to be keeping 780 as a selectable template - and only adding the extra bars in the 1024 and full screen versions)

that's what i said!

It is 2% at the moment, but with the increase of smaller devices and therefore lower res screens being more popular - i can see that increasing

I guess they'd have to scroll a bit more - although actually, if i put the bar on the right rather than the left - then they wouldn't ..... oh except for the thread pages ...

hmm....

Hows about having the index.php being blank and just running a jscript that detects screen res and redirect to the home page with the variable in the url. That way the homepage will know the screen width and can use the old layout or new layout depending on res?

I dunno - I can't see 800x600 increasing ... smaller resolutions perhaps, but then they're stuffed by the current one anyway ....

Ok right - here it is at 950 wide - if you want it back to thinner - at the bottom of the page choose "Fiat Forum Traditional (Lo-Res)"

I'm thinking though, it *might* be possible to make the width choseable from within the user control panel. Ie an option that says:

What width do you want the forum to be: (Default 950)
And Do you want the right information blocks: (Default yes)

Anyway, for now - I'll leave as is - should less crampen things up for people who were complaining before (y)

That's an interesting idea actually ... :chin:

if its not automatic (should be easy though?) can you make it remember the setting per pc, not per user - as obviously i dont use different accounts when on this pc or the laptop.

Thing to remember though Ben is that a lot of us use and prefer the full-screen forum setting so it fills the whole width of the screen, whatever size we are using, not just 780 pixels of it. If you don't like the front page, why not redesign it to be pretty? Away from that, the navbar at the top does a good enough job IMO. If not, then IMO it has to be turn-off-able (y)

I've just set my screen to 1024, feels like I'm looking at it through a goldfish bowl from 6 feet away.

do you use a below 1024 pixel screen width?
latest figues i can find say more than 70% of PC users are still 800-1024 pixels on 15-17" monitors (that does not include laptops)

i'm currently 1024x768 on a 17" monitor. higher resolutions are not suitable or beneficial for me.

imo there is nothing on the front page that needs to be on the forum. i only view the front page once a month if i'm lucky and when i do i never read anything on it, its only when my cookies have been deleted and i need to log in again. most of the stuff on that page can be accessed from the menu anyway so i dont see the need. i voted yes to the poll to try and skew the results :p
