Technical Sump Plug

Hi all,

I bought a new sump plug from Fiat and it takes a 1/2" socket. Why have fiat gone back to using Imperial sizes?

Also what is the best way to remove a damaged sump plug?

a female 1/2 inch socket is same as a 13mm

1/2" is actually 12.7mm.

Just wondered why fiat have started using imperial sizes again? Maybe its to try and stop people changing the oil, as a 1/2 " socket isnt as common any more. I went to halfords & b&q and neither sold individual imperial sockets. Although im sure specialised car shops will.

Mine is probably too rounded to put an 1/2 inch socket on i will try that though - anyone got any other ideas what to use to remove plug?

Try and bang a smaller socket on,

try a bit of heat then cold

plus gas or Bilt hamber Ferrisol



drill a hole in it then use a stud extractor..... (my mate did this this as his last gasp effort when all else failed this morning and won)

I use 12mm on GP's, never had problem during literally hundreds of services.

When I was on the shop floor I used to use a 1/2" if a 13mm was loose on a 13mm head/nut. A bang on with the hammer and it normally bit enough to undo it.
The sump plug may be loose on a double hex 13mm - try a single hex as they offer a better grip.

Of course it could be a 12mm as the post above ^^

One final question - why do you need a new sump plug anyway. The oldest GP is 55 plate.
Which butcher has been in there before with a wrong sized spanner or molegrips
