Hi there,

I've had my 57 Eleganza for over 4 years now and it's been great. Bar one electrical problem it's only ever needed wear and tear attention.

This morning however it started playing up. In traffic, the engine check light came on suddenly and the revs started dropping. I caught it and pulled into a side road with the car cutting out. It wasn't revving well so I stopped it and sat there for a minute thinking 'what the hell'.

Started it up again and it was running OK. The check light was still on but I assume that doesn't just clear.

Drove for another 10 minutes absolutely fine, before doing the same thing again when I was waiting at a junction. Caught it, and got to work.

But now what! Going to have a look at it at lunch. Check to see if there is anything obvious. But I'm not mechanically minded.

Meant to be driving to Brighton at the weekend (50 miles), so this isn't good timing!

It's come on very suddenly. Could something just have come loose?

Cheers

At lunch I nipped out, checked there were no leaks, checked the oil (on the lower end but still fine), and checked the leads (HT etc).

Nothing is obviously loose, but as we were running it it did change, and looks/sounds very much like a cylinder is missing. It did sort itself out, before dipping again.

Hopefully I just need to replace a lead! Fingers crossed. Getting it into a garage either later today or tomorrow ii I can get a slot.

An inconsistent problem is there worst kind.

Hi again,:)

common for this type of thing are,
poor / worn;

spark plugs, HT leads , coil pack/s , lambda probes

IF it's not had plugs in the last 2 years / 12K miles.. I would get them changed - as it's the cheapest AND quickest to wear;)

I've only had lower spec cars where the EML is just a light on dash ( like oil / battery / handbrake) and they just go on + off,

the "message" may remain until the ignition is off / reset.

as I said earlier - on phone - there SHOULD be a stored Fault message CODE

that'll help pinpoint the issue;)

 ok - so when it's idling - does the rev counter stay steady.. or fluctuate between 1000 and 1250 RPM..??

could help point towards a reluctant cylinder..,

Fixed!

Turns out it was a coil pack. I was running on 2 cylinders! Part ordered, delivered and fitted within an 90 minutes. He showed me the diagnostics board too as he cleared the error message.

Nicely done in the end. Thanks for your replies :)
