Evening all!
Well, the Demon Panda is at it again. Driving home from work last night, I was thankfully only 5 minutes from home, when the engine light came on. The car wasn't 'hesitant', was driving fine, just as it had to work that morning and all the way home (about 15 miles or so), and there wasn't anything obvious (to an idiot like me anyway) as to why it would suddenly come on.

Dad put his new toy on it this morning, a Foxhall OBD2 code reader (that doesn't have Fiat listed in it's Make list!) and after a few minutes playing about, came up with the fault code P0172. A quick Google says it means the engine is running too rich, yet it was fine both to work and home again, until that point. I do have to drive on some dual carriageway, but there is normal town driving either side of it, and as I said, the car was fine until I was five minutes from home. There is some suggestion that it is the MAF sensor, but this is a petrol model not diesel. Do they both have MAF sensors?

Am I being a bit of a novice in thinking this might be connected to the new thermostat we fitted a few weeks ago? I have noticed in the last week or so, upon start up, that there is a sound from the passenger side, like water running, but it stops after at most a minute of driving, and there isn't any sign of water in the footwell / dampness. Could this be connected? We did bleed the coolant system when we fitted the thermostat and it was all ok for the past few weeks, and there doesn't appear to have been any leaks.

I'm a bit worried about driving the car right now in case it damages further, but I need to go to work next week. Can anyone offer any ideas as to a) what the problem might be, and b) How to fix it, or at least how I might try and find out? I know the car is nearly 21 years old now, but it has grown on me and I'd rather keep it going than try and find something to replace it.
Many Thanks

It's now about elemination

I had an exhaust leak. Rear box clamp rotted and fell off within a year of fitting that did something similar. Evap purge system has done somehting similar as well but also made it go into limp home.
A few weeks back I had some string like stuff coming out of the exhaust. Could this be linked to that? The exhaust was last done pre-pandemic, so could it be a new one is needed?

Does the ECT engine coolant temperature reading right

Is the dial correct on the dash
Could you repeat in language for us idiots please? Which dial do you mean? And which one is the engine coolant temperature light? Sorry to be a pain but although I've been driving for over 20 years, for various reasons, I'm only now really getting into ficxing my car.
Have you cleared the code, does it come back
I think Dad has cleared the code but I'm wary of driving the car in case it causes more problems. Dad ordered a new MAP sensor this afternoon, as it was mentioned before, when I had trouble with the thermostat. I've looked in the Haynes manual, but I can't quite figure out where it sits in the engine bay.

Shouldn't be the cause unless it's failing near the engine, these cars run fine if noisy with the back box completely missing

Is this gauge registering C at ignition on, is it quickly and smoothly climbing to the midway and staying there, No jumping around

Ah! I get what you mean now. Yes it starts at C and after about five minutes driving it now goes up to the halfway mark and stays there. Heater works fine, both recirculating and drawing from the engine. It did take me a while to get the thermostat and get it fitted. Could driving it with the faulty thermostat have caused another issue down the line?

Gurgling from the heater is always a concern. Our 2007 1.2 is very hard to fully bleed. I use a large diameter hose that fits over the heater hose bleed screw boss (screw removed) and a funnel on the top. I pour in 1/4 litre of coolant and squeeze the radiator top hose until there are no bubbling noises. If the radiator tank gets over-filled I suck some out with a 100ml syringe.

The separate water bottle used on 100HP and diesel is a much better system. IMO.

Sounds like there air in the system, or entering the system
Having watched Jon Coupland on Youtube with his wife's Fiat 500, I wondered if it might have been the drain thingy in the scuttle, so am planning to try and clean these out. Before Christmas there was a bit of a puddle in then scuttle that sounded like it was sloshing about as I turned corners, but I'm beginning to suspect I was wrong. Can't hurt to clean them anyway.

Could there be a split in a hose somewhere? I'm guessing most of these hoses are 21 years old (I got the car second hand), so I suppose it isn;t unexpected if they're starting to fail.
