Wotcha!

Pulled away from the lights.
1st into 2nd, no problem.
Get into 3rd and everything goes funky.

Limped it home, about 2mins away, in 3rd slipping the clutch a fair bit.

Gear stick is loose, only moves between position 3 and 4, regardless of clutch position.

Clutch works as expected.

There's a local place I'm going to call tomorrow, hoping I can limp it there.

How screwed do you reckon I am?

Assuming cable snapped as @koalar mentions it is possible If you fiddle around a bit with the selector arms on the gearbox to engage a lower gear for the drive to garage so saving clutch, as long as you don't find fifth or reverse.:)
I replaced the gear cables on my 1.6 Fiat Doblo, it does involve car on stands, heat shield off exhaust, gear lever centre consul removed , plus battery to access, so easiest for your garage to do if you don't have the tools etc.

Cheers for the info, I'm leaning towards it being cables or selector joint aswell.

I've worked on my own motorbikes for years, I'm confident enough to fix this myself except I don't have the space to lift the car up enough.

Fingers crossed it is a simple fix and it's not going to cost a bomb to fix.

I'll let y'all know what the local grease monkey says.

Cheers again and much love, boyos.

It is straight forward enough with hand tools, jack and axle stands, but easiest with a ramp.
Ball joint if worn can jump off under bonnet as suggested but most common is the cable end breaking off just past the ball joint.:(

Can be done on ramps

There's only the grommet though the chassis that has to be done from underneath, the rest is from on top or inside the car

You can just see the selector levers at the back of the battery

This one selects the forward and backward motion of the gear stick

It will be more than likely stuck in one direction, and the gearstick having no effect

You can just about reach you hand in

If you move it to the vertical (neutral) and then the other direction the gearbox will be in second, only do this absolutely necessary

3rd is probably the best if it's reasonably flat and not too much traffic

It will require the gearstick to be held to the right from inside the car before move the lever back to its original position to select 3rd , so a pain

Here's mine selecting 1st and second

Yes, I have a scrap 2010 Fiat Doblo 1.6 mj I am using for spares and the gear cable is broken on that. To engage gears to move it around the yard I wrap the seat belt around the gearlever in the car to keep selector in the correct position, then go under the bonnet to select either first or reverse to move it around as not inclined to invest in new cables on that one. Happily it has already paid for it's self.;)

Righto, got back from dropping it off at Mr. Clutch in Southport.
He quoted about 289, inc fitting i think.

I'm wondering if that'll be a price for a genuine part, if so is it worth going for an aftermarket one?

The the cable start at £30
I wouldn't have thought Mr clutch will not be fitting OEM, they fit tend to fit OE equivalent

OEM are a touch under £100

On a lift, if you done one before it's a 10 minute job
The only slightly tricky part is removing the trim under the gearstick, almost everything else pops of with two big levers

I wish every "10 minute job" i started actually took 10 minutes :D

First one always takes longer

The ball joints pop off, much easier if you have the correct forked tool,.I use two tyre levers and brut force

The cables different size ends so only fit one way
The grommet underneath just pops out

Undoing the clips on trim is the only slightly difficult part, it's always the one nearest the steering column that refuses to play nice for me, you can't see it and it's done by feel

Battery and tray just unbolt out

There's two clips holding the outer cable to the gearbox, these should just pull up,. more likely they will be slightly corroded and need tapping around and tapped out with a large screwdriver

Update,
GarageMans called.
It is snapped cables
275 all in
aftermarket parts.
According to google £275 seems to be the average price

My head says

80 labour
100 part
36 vat
216 total

Should be top wack

Plus it gives some wiggle room if it does not go smoothly as there extra both on the part and labour

Fairly common failure, be interesting to see what other people have been charged as a comparison

I agree, My Clutch are not doing you any favours.
Still if not convenient to do yourself, then little choice.
On my Doblo which sounds a little more involved, the pair of reasonable OEM cables from eBay was around £78 all in and as mine involved jacks and stands, heat shield off exhaust etc. I took roughly 90 minutes without rushing as in my 70s.:)
