Technical Strange problems...

HI folks, my wife's Punto 1.2 sporting (52 plate) has started playing up recently, it has cut out a few times and the dash lights have gone mad, odometer pulses and flashes, power steering light flashes along with the abs and handbrake light. The power steering stops working and the back lighting and gauges themselves stop too.

This has happened a few times now and I'm getting a tad worried...

Can anyone help?

Best guess, loose or dirty battery cables, loose or dirty main earth leads in engine bay. Undo, scratch clean, coat with silicone grease, tighten up.

Yes it did the other day, didnt notice this time around, why?

I'll check it tomorrow, when the engine is running though, does it not take its power from the alternator?

Yes and no
the alternator generates more power for the battery, but when the alternator isn't generating enough and more demand is made - such as the power steering sucking big juice boxes when going from lock to lock, the battery takes up the slack

If the battery connector isn't sitting happily - then its not connected to the battery snugly, the demand is all on the alternator, but how much power is needed - its hard to tell if its not seing the battery properly!

Remove - Clean - Refit the terminals and protect with copper slip or vaseline
