Technical Stilo spring

Front nearside spring gone. Spring catcher caught it fortunately. I know this is common but has anyone on forum driven on the broken spring and if so for how long safely?
(My springs are originals and have done 131k which may be a record.)

Drive on a broken spring.. DONT..the both will have to be replaced as soon as possible..see recomendations for make in other threads..

Ours only came to light at the MoT two weeks ago - Its the wifes car so she didn't notice but I felt it on discovery on a speed bump - probably not advisable but she was probably running around on it for a few weeks..........

How do you know its went? I'm getting a funny clunking on rough terrain and over speed bumps....

Litlle tinkling noise and the broken bit was in the spring catcher ,. Didnt hear a bang at anytime.
Your problem could be drop links. Ive replaced them a time or two.

my multi wagon off/side spring front went at 86k was a very loud bang when it went at 10mph and hit a pot hole, took it easy 17 mile drive home and did not drive it again until I replaced them, not sure I fancy the idea of driving about with the chance of more damage occuring , not an expensive fix just annoying.

I've read reports of people driving considerable distances like that but obviously you should get them replaced ASAP - and drive carefully

Thanks for feedback guys! Booked it in for Friday, should get springs tomorrow in readiness.

Just had wifeys 1.2 springs replaced with Boge for £158.98p parts labour and VAT! She drove for 3 days with a single winding of the coil broken on the bottom of the drivers side. No obvious effects TBH and the broken bit was towards the suspension strut not towards the tyre. Car runs at the same height as before if just a tad firmer for now....

Good price on the springs Ffoxy and labour and vat inclusive to.. boge spring rock and so do the struts they sell ..I bought one for my stilo after an augument she had with a renault people carrier..strut got bent and I stripped it out and replaced it with a boge one for £50 from my friendly auto parts supplier....

Thanks for the tip-off PNL appreciated, the springs were in stock, they dont do many Stilo springs apparently.... Maybe thats just cos theres no many Stilos about but lucky me! For a change...

welcome to the club 850kd I drove mine for about a week till I spoted the cause of the noise, then had fun sourcing replacment springs till I remembered thompsonlocal.com typed in motor factors and hay presto spent the rest of the morning getting grief from the mrs for being dumb then the afternoon sat on my drive changing them pretty easy to do but get a good set of spring compressors hope this helps

Thanks for comments Rowena. My repair man is going to do the job tomorrow - Im too old to do such jobs these days. Its taken me a while to join the 'spring club', Ive had the car 6 years and 130k on the clock so Ive been more fortunate than many!

My own springs fitted today.
Arrived at the Garage to see a Puegeot 306 having a new front spring fitted. It (the Puegoet spring) had broken about midway in the coil. And the Puegeot doesnt have a spring catcher like we have on our modified Stilos.
Stilos are not so bad afer all.

not just lagunas dan. thanks to the state of British roads plus the continuous gritting, a lot of other cars are now breaking springs, including fords and toyotas.

WRT the thread, i drove on mine for god knows how long as the breakage itself was accidentally discovered when the car went on the ramps to check something and a piece of the spring fell out!

pretty handy bit of kit that spring catcher mod if you're on standard springs.

just a note though, the springs on the mr2 have rusted completly to the point where bits of rust are falling off them, but they haven't broke.

I've said it before, but an annual coat of Waxoyl brushed onto the springs prevents even a trace of corrosion.

As new! (replaced 3 times after 16 years normally)
