Stilo or Punto ???

Hello all, simple question:

I currently own a 2003 Stilo Abarth. I do love it, but I'm getting tired of it... Now I've seen a 2007 Grande Punto JTD 1.9 for sale... so my question.

Which car is better? Faster? More reliable?

I would like the economy of a diesel but also want similar speed of the stilo.

You're expecting a lot from a 1.9 Diesel to compete with a 2.4 petrol engine.............

170bhp against 120 (although some chip makers claim to be able to up it to 150 or so).

Hmm... I was hoping the higher power to weight and torque would account for the lesser hp. Maybe not enough...

The GP ain't a light car, I'd be surprised if there were much difference in weight with the stilo really. In gear however you may find the diesel more flexible which would at least give the illusion of higher performance?

Just looked at figures:

Stilo - 0 to 60 is 8.5 seconds, top speed is 134mph, gross weight is 1775kg

Gp sporting (130hp)9.5 seconds, 124mph and 1765kg

Gp eleganza (120hp) 10 seconds, 118mph and 1780kg

In performance you would take a small step down, but gain massively in running costs. However consider the famous gearbox issues of the mjet. To be honest, I'd have any of the above, always loved the 3dr stilos.

good point, as 8.5 sec's isn't TOO quick, although the top speed seems GOOD for a DERV

maybe a chipped JTD stilo would be a better bet - as the GP isn't without it's issues and the OP is obviously happy with the Stilo's "character",

According to autotrader the 2.4 Stilo Abarth is 8.5 seconds to 60mph. I double checked as I agree it doesn't seem quick enough. Only 170bhp though, even hot hatches with 200 are around 7 seconds.

Yeah I had a look through the autotrader review now too. I guess the reality is I'll be getting a slower but torquier car. Newer looks. Less complicated (the stilo is really starting to have little things break).

Difficult decision! I do love my stilo...

I've always liked the looks of the GP TBH - ended up buying a NEW one this year - BUT the Stilo will always be a "classic" for looks + performance / tech.

Just make sure you read on here about the potential for gearbox issues, as could be a very expensive problem.

To avoid this you may consider a 1.4tjet petrol? Similar pace to the mjet but more reliable 'box.

If you decide Gp I vote getting a new orleans blue one, stunning car in that colour.

Actually I can't find any posts containing Punto Gearbox... might just be this android app though. I'll search again next time I'm at a desktop.

The pic above is the exact car I was looking to buy. Its immaculate and has skyroof - which is rare in new zealand.

That's quite a good one. If you do as one poster suggests and Google m32 gearbox which is used in a huge variety of cars you can get more info. But then there's lots of people with no issues whatsoever. The GP in your pic looks in very good condition so hopefully looked after.

You can use Fiat Coupe parts to make the Stilo quicker. At least they use Stilo blocks to make the 600+bhp quarter mile Coupe's.

Where are these figures from? Not sure about 0-60 times, but those weight figures are well off, by about half a tonne easily.

They're gross weight not kerb weight, couldn't see kerb weight figures so gave those as an example.

Can someone look for curb weights? Im trying but phone data signal is horrific. They are more accurate but gross is a good indication of measuring what a vehicle can handle in terms of load etc...

Ah right, that would explain it, I know Stilo's are around 1250-1400kg curb depending upon the model and variant.

Its a long shot, but think GP is 1050-1200kg iirc but I could be wrong.
