General Stilo or Golf?!

Did it make the ride harsh at all....or crashy? The only time I did springs alone was on an Alfa 33 and the ride became very crashy. Have only doen one road car since and used coilovers...but I havent got the money at the minute (the race season is upon me and I need loads of things before Easter)

It became "just right", feeling much safer when cornering but maintained enough comfort. I had a spinal fusion in November 05 and needed a soft enough ride but one that kept me firmly in the seat, in the Eibach's i got the lot. If you come to one of the meets feel free to try mine out, if it's Gaydon you can take her round the track.

Sorry for the short reply to your question......

but any day of the week, month or year, the Golf wins!

My main reason for purchasing a Stilo over a Golf was the insurance grouping. If I didn't have the points, I would of stuck to my Audi, but prior to that I always wanted a Golf.

After driving my brothers Golf, I see that its pretty similar to the Audi A3 in drive, but the Audi wins anyday in terms of features and looks.

The only positive point on the Stilo (correct me if I'm wrong, as I've only just bought a Stilo) is that the parts seem to be significantly cheaper than say a VW or Audi. And maybe perhaps the "unique" looks you get, although I got much nicer looks when driving my Audi than in the Stilo, lol.

Also, I was able to sell my Audi for the same price that I bought it for a year later and driving quite a significant amount, with the full cost of the year only being between £300-450 on my personal extra's (xenons, roof mount screen & dvd player, mp3 headunit with SD & USB & also parking sensors) but excluding a service at a cost of £200, I don't think I will get anywhere near this sort of return on the Stilo come a year, but maybe the carputer, xenons, parking sensors and a few other extra's I have planned for the Stilo will help boost the value when it comes time to sell.

Well thats my 2 pence on the matter. Hope you have a great buy whatever you end up buying, or have already bought.

Sorry for butting in here guys, but what are 'coil overs'?

Ive ben thinking of having Eibachs fitted to my MJET, but Ive seen this 'coil over' thing being mentioned and I'm a bit confused?

Mind you, it is Friday night and Ive had a glass of wine or two....

Coil-overs is the usual name for dampers which use a captive spring over the damper (from memory a 2.5" spring).

In essence very similar to the stock McPherson struts just a little different in execution.

Generally you'll also have a degree of adjustment of the spring platforms to change ride height and/or pre-load. Often the dampers have adjustment too.

Look at any racing car for the design.

Thanks for the explanation Cris.

The company Ive spoken to reckon they can fit -30mm Eibachs quite comfortably with the existing dampers, I just wasnt sure if the coil overs were somethjing I needed that I'd not added into the equation.

I have the Eibachs on mine (result of broken spring) and they are excellent.

I hate rock solid suspension and these keep plenty of compliance.

IMHO the stock spring are too soft for quick driving, they bottom out and loose body control when you push on. The Eibachs have neither of these problems.

You won't end up with Clio 182 Trophy but it's a big improvement for pretty much all conditions (unless you drive Miss Daisy  ).

I'd guess that you have 16s or 17s already (can't see an MJet without) but if you haven't chopping the 15s steelies in also makes a world of difference.

FYI the JTD and 2.4 Abarth use the same springs.

Hi,

Its good to hear you're pleased with the Eibachs and I agree with you entirely about the standard springs.

Since I had the remap done, I feel its really shown up the standard setup and to be honest I'm pretty sure I wont get the full benefit of the remap until the Eibachs are on.

You're right about the wheels as well - I am on 17's so I gues I'm over half way there!

Thanks again for your advice Cris, much appreciated.

Just another thought, what kind of difference does fitting Ebachs make to your insurance - major or minor?

Cheers,

Ian.

stilo or golf eeeemmmmmm, well as I'm new to this forum I guess what I say won't matter still I recently enquired about purchasing the stilo 2.4 20 valve selespeed (2002) and had test drove it, super hot hatch, good looker and nice toys however, after watching top gear and reading reviews, in my opinion, I would opt for a half decent Golf 19 tdi, cheaper to insure, cheaper to tax, cheaper for parts....... I only say this as the couple that I viewed and test drove, something was wrong, window wipers, power steering, dodgy lights, faulty lights, faulty paddles, faulty phone etc, etc, etc, need I say more!!!!! oh and the parts are very pricy, for example, power steering assembly £685, voice activator for cd, phone, sat nav, the whole lot has to be removed and at a cost of nearly £600............ buy the diesel gti (tdi) great car at half the price................................... watch the top gear show with regards to the stilo (all models) Jezza got it right..... great handling, good top speed, DON'T KEEP IT FOR LONG and they don't hold value, I also insured a merc 320clk coupe and saved myself £200 so do a bit of checking around before buying a white elephant!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!(n)(n)(n)(n)(n)

Which Top Gear episode was it reviewed?

IIRC, the Stilo was released inbetween old and new format Top Gear, meaning Fifth Gear covered the review. I remember vividly VBH testing it and not liking it much, saying things like the rear light cluster looked expensive to replace

I would've been interested to see the Clarkson look at the Stilo for sure. He may well have written up a mag review of it though.
