Technical Stilo CAN Bus Question

i guess a 2nd hand one is still going to cost me several hundred at the very least.

Several have sold on eBay recently without the security code for between £150 and £185. The security code costs about £40 to get from Fiat or Magneti Marelli, but some Fiat dealers tell you that they can't get the codes.

Dave.

ok dokey...price wise i may be able to live with that...

just to check...if a fiat dealer tells me i cant get the code...i go to another dealer? do this mean they cant or wont get code?

assumedly i need "a code" to use the unit? and/or i cant use one provided by the seller?

also assumedly this is a one off code you enter after plugging the unit in?

any / all help appreciated thanks guys...

hold on...one last stupid question(or at least it may be) ...if i do get a sat nav where do i mount my existing JVC DAB stereo? its currently sat in the sat nav slot where its housed using the FIAT plastic equivelent replacement.

I think it means that they don't know they can get the code for Connect Nav units. Apparently there was a Service Bulletin issued to all Fiat dealers a while ago explaining how to get the codes but I suspect it got filed away and forgotten about.

There is some unofficial software about that makes the unit work without a code.

Yes you only need to enter the code once, then it's stored in the car's Body Computer.

If anyone has any detailed information on this unofficial software I would love to hear from them. Im picking through the 9.8 and 11.0 images at the moment (file sizes/names/checksums or an iso would be lovely)

Cheers

The code is for the Connect Nav unit and should come with it but often, sellers have lost or never had the code. It's only needed when you fit the unit into a different car.

Connect Nav is a radio, CD player, Sat-Nav and telephone built into one unit. You wouldn't fit it and another stereo in the car.

Dave.

I havent yet tried the latest version of philips software as my laptop hdd has died and the only other machine is a desktop. But the older version worked absolutely fine.

The software is looking very good, but I think there is just the matter of sorting it for donators only that Philip is currently working on.

I tried Philip's latest beta version 1.17 and was very satisfied with the result - this was the first version without any remarks, it would be a fine first release version in my opinion!
service reset , gauge sweep, date & time setting , ELM 327 and Peak Pcan terminal function with user configurable command boxes all work o.k.
Philip did a great job so far and we are thinking about future features at the moment.
I assume Philip will get back here as soon as he has found a solution regarding the distribution to donating forum members.
To be continued....

ouch.. top bit of kit then!! (not trying be overly picky but does it have mp3 or DAB capabilities?)

assumedly if the seller supplies a code then i can use "that" code once i've fitted it into "another" stilo?

both the CN and CN+ do mp3 and also display tags. DAB wasnt invented in 2001.

the code is linked to the car the CN originally came from. you know the car VIN then happy days you should be able to order it from a dealer, you dont then you're a bit buggered. Codes CAN be ordered from Magnetti Marelli via a dealer using the unit serial number for a fee, but this is rather hit and miss.

NOTE: for those who have the 'unlocked' 9.8 firmware, PLEASE DO NOT distribute it. This should only be available to members who have donated £5 or more to the FIATFORUM, and only the forum, not a personal donation to yourself if you know what i mean.

assumably i wouldnt need anything else but a CN unit which i could connect and the VIn number? ie i could just type im MY cars VIN in once fitted and 'happy days'?

i thought the VIN number is on the a plate tagged to the car somewhere if memory serves?

actually its on a previous MOT document and begins ZFA followed by 14 digits. does this sound right?

so, buy CN (or CN+), fit, and enter the VIN number from my MOT document and i'm good to go.:)

have i missed anything?

You don't type your VIN into the Connect Nav. You need the code or the 'unlocked' 9.8 firmware that Oz explains how to get above.

To get the code from a dealer you would need the serial number from the paper label on top of the Connect Nav. They may ask for a high resolution photograph of the label and bar code and some dealers may ask to see the VIN and/or registration document to prove ownership.

If a dealer was able to get the code from your VIN, it would be the code for the original Connect Nav that was fitted in the car when new, not for the Connect Nav that you intend buying.

so...

i can only enter a Code thats is pertinent to that particular Connect/Nav.

My VIN is no good to me if i buy another but i may be able to get the 'code' by supplying the serial number on the paper label of the purchased Connect Nav.

i do have a laptop, should i donate and get firmware etc etc what type of cable is required to connect to car and where..i'd assumed some type of serial cable or a specific adapter?

To connect to your car you would need an Elm 327 v1.3 interface, you can get them in serial/bluetooth and usb varieties.

You can set the clock by sending some commands through hyperterminal.. very easy.

Dan

one of these bad boys then?

the usb goes into the pc and the other connector goes to the connectors sitting loose at the back of where my sat nav used to sit?

bare in mind that while i'm a techie of many years i've never connected to my car before to update firmware so i may sound a little lost at times..

Yep, thems the ones lol, I would message the seller asking him to confirm that it is definately an ELM v1.3 - if it is thats the one you need.

One end connects to the PC, the other end goes to the diagnostic connector at the top of the fuse box. It is really important that it is the 1.3 version.

The dealer can obtain the code of a CN unit using the VIN of the car that that particular unit was ORIGINALLY fitted to, not the persons current car.

gotcha...so i need the vin number of the car the connetc nav came out of.

and assumedly i'll need the laptop and the adapter to program this in once fitted?

yes, but bear in mind that it might not have been original to the car it came from. i.e. it might have been fitted to it beforehand. easiest thing is to just make sure the unit comes with its code!

nope, its plug and play. the talk on this thread is for something else.

We appear to be talking about 2 different situations here.

If you are going to fit another Connect Nav in the car, you need the code for the CN you are going to fit or the firmware from Oz. The firmware is on a CD that you install on the CN once fitted in the car. This CD goes in the CN CD slot. In this case you do not need a laptop or cable or ELM adaptor.

If you are not going to fit another CN in the car, you need a laptop, cable, ELM adaptor and the CAN BUS software (when available) or a visit to Dan in Leeds to program the settings in your car (clock etc.) that would normaly be done by a CN.

Dave.

Not totally sure about this but I suspect a dealer may be able to get the code from Fiat for a new CN that was originaly fitted in a car when it was built from the VIN.

I've discussed this a lot with a Fiat Tech. member of the forum who got 2 CN codes for me and discovered that for a reconditioned CN the codes are only availabe for Magneti Marelli (via a Fiat dealer) and they need a photograph of the paper label on top of the CN.

It would appear that when an original new CN was replaced under warranty, (as lots were) it would be replaced with a reconditioned one and the new code and VIN were never recorded by Fiat.

Dave.
