Technical Squealing Startup Noise

Technical Squealing Startup Noise

A thought comes to mind, is the unit going to open? I know sometimes manufacturers don't make this easy.
You shouldn't need to

If its squealing it will be pretty seized, push the gear round with a screwdriver and it will climb the shaft exposing the helix, you have to turn it the right way for it to climb, there's a one way clutch

You will be surprised the difference it makes, once cleaned and lubed you will be able the push it round with your finger after

They aren't that difficult to strip down, but it's over complaining things and in most cases unnecessary in my opinion, just one more thing to go wrong

Both the petrol and diesel starters are pretty reliable
Agree completely, just never had a diesel one squeal. I've got 4 of them in my "tested, good" pile, but they haven't needed to be been cleaned up and re-greased.
I've had a couple which had corrosion problems (which got binned).
And another two which were the wrong (vauxhall) version (along with butchered wiring on the car which I had to reinstate) which I replaced with Fiat versions. So they must have been swapped out at some point, but no idea why.
Otherwise they seem just as tough as the petrol ones.

Pretty sure that's the cause. My 100hp and quite a few 1.2s made exactly that noise, and a cleanup and LIGHT re-grease sorted them.
The best grease type I've found for these so far is the LiquiMoly LM47 one in the picture, but I'm sure others will have their own recommendations.
There is another cause I've seen, which is that part of the engagement fork has broken off, and this temporarily jams the bendix out. If there is a loose rattle when shaking the starter then it is worth dismantling to inspect.
Or you could just replace, but repair is my preferred option.
I've just bought some LM47, not sure exactly when i'll do the job, i have a few other things ahead of it in a queue.

The starter that needs replacing is a couple of years old, and has 10,000 miles worth of driving. Its just sticking unpredictably, before i participated in this thread i was in the mindset of just get another one, but now i may well refurbish the one on there. It probably does just need some grease.
..... and it probably came from eBay. Far far too many knock off substandard and dangerous things appearing. eBay is fine but I will only buy from suppliers that can be accredited. Even then its becoming a gamble.

is it an actual Moly Grease? ie containing Moly additive? I'm a great fan of moly grease in anything other than rolling contact ball and roller bearings.

Its the same packaging that @irc pictured in post 10 of this thread, i found the same packaging on Amazon for double the price, now i'm wondering why...

Edit: I got mixed up, i thought you were talking about the grease but you were talking about the starter, which I got brand new from GSFcarparts. So the grease i just bought will be good :)

Third party sellers on eBay and Amazon is a lottery

Some good
Some bad
Some mostly good but get caught out occasionally

If I use their available at nearby at our distributors search

It comes back with 4 suppliers within 10 miles of me in Crewe

I have stopped using GSF after some 'disappointments'. Some off their stuff has proved less than best.

Up here in Edinburgh GSF just isn't in the game. Their nearest depot is on the other side of the central belt in Glasgow and no-one seems to even mention them. ECP are a big player but I had some wrong parts and substitute makes quite some years ago which put me off them. You see their vans everyday though, maybe they have improved. There's also a very active Dingbro which gives good discounts to trade only, but, like TPS, are trade accounts only. That leaves me to choose between Pentland Components and SRS - who are now NAPA with S4p for specialist FIAT stuff. Because they are almost on my doorstep, it's NAPA where I end up for much of my stuff - they give me better prices than Pentland too.
