Tuning Sod more power, I want more fuel economy!!

So I filled up this morning and ragged it in (down the motorway at 6am). Petrol doesn't seem to have gone down much.
Who said the scale is linear

From a very full tank I used to get about 100 miles on the first quarter, than 100 miles between 3/4 and 1/4 (half the scale) and another 100 miles before filling (y)

You are using my old gauge, but not sender :).

Who said the scale is linear.

That's a good point, and come to think of it, I've noticed it doesn't seem to go down evenly.

Still, I'm leaving it to Monday before trying again for the week. :)
Will reset my trip counter after I fill up Monday morning and see what I can get each week.

Weekend's shopping list includes:

One near side wing
One off side wing
Bolt for the under car exhaust heat shield
4 steel wheels (all have brand spanking new tyres)
One near side drive shaft
Both suspension arms
Internal handle/ coat hook
Near side wheel arch liner
Off side wing mirror (mine has always been cracked since I got it)

I think it's going to be a busy weekend :D

One near side wing - DONE
One off side wing - DONE
Bolt for the under car exhaust heat shield - No, see below
4 steel wheels - DONE
One near side drive shaft - DONE (see below)
Both suspension arms - Got the near side, CBA with the off side.
Internal handle/ coat hook - Done, see below
Near side wheel arch liner- DONE
Off side wing mirror - DONE

The front bolt for the exhaust heatshield..... seems not to be a bolt. I checked on my dad's car.. and it seems to be a rivet, rather than a bolt or screw. Can anyone shed any light on what this is? Is it easy to get a replacement for this?

Near side drive shaft - will the drive shaft from the 5 door 903cc Uno 45 fit my Uno Fire? It seems to be roughly the same, but the part that goes into the gearbox doesn't seem (to the best of my memory) to be exactly the same. Is this correct, or am I just tripping and it will work fine?

Internal handle/coat hook - I took the handle off with no problems, but the one the bit that somewhat confused me. There seems to be a metal 'plug' that the screw... screws into. However, this plug appears to be inside the chassis, with no possible way of removing it. it does wobble around, but it is if it was put into the frame, and then the rest of the chassis was welded together, meaing that the plug doesn't seem to be able to come out.

Can anyone shed some light as to these points please?

All the other bits are off the car now, which seems to be getting lighter and lighter! By the way, dad has said that if anyone needs any parts from it, they are free if you come and collect them. If you need anything, let me know and I will check that it is there before you set off, as well as giving you my dads address before you set off too ;)
Its a Mk2 5 door black Uno 45 if you are interested - Jai, Chas, you two are the most likely to need bits, so just let me know. It's only in Harrow anyway so not too far from you. :)

It's a 'captive nut'. If you look at it you should see two small 'legs' that that are bent to hold it onto the edge of the hole. If you bend these legs outwards you'll find that the captive nut will fall into the hole. What you can do is insert a bolt into the captive nut and hold onto this bolt whilst bending the legs away from the hole. You should then be able to slide the captive nut up in the hole a small amount, then tilt it towards you so that the bottom protrudes from the hole. You should then be able to withdraw it. Re-fitting is a reversal of removal ;)

Well in my 88 - $200.00 - 60s Uno I only got 36.27 mpg. That was with 2/3 country running and 1/3 city running. I think I should get another 10 mpg out of it. What do others think am I expecting too much? It only has midget 155/70Rx13 tyres. And an incorrectly functioning econ gauge!

My daughters 86 Holden Barina/Suzuki Swift 1300 gets 57mpg on a long trip, country running.I want to copy that in my Uno.

Biscuit steelies are back on now, I filled up to the brim this morning with fuel, though had to go a bit faster than I would have liked as I was late (changed the wheels over this morning beore leaving for work and so had to also inflate them!) and have bought a vacuum guage

I also reset my trip clock.

Will keep you all updated as to my mileage.

I just need to think of a good place to install the gauge now.

The 903cc Uno has Oil filled CV boots.. did you notice all that gear oil fall out ;).

You have the later fire gearbox which has dry cups, so I can't really see it working (n). Anyone???

I do have a second set of drive shafts suitable

Ah yes... the oil..
which went all over the carpet that we were laying on.

Oh, oh the hilarity that ensued!

It was that split second that both my dad and I were looking at this torrent of oil pouring out, just staring in disbelief and thinking "shiiiiiiiiiiit!". He grabbed a nearby plastic box and just checked that under the oil. We ended up draining the engine anyway.

I may well get in touch with you about that driveshaft, I think the current one works fine, but I want to get two new wheel bearings, but don't get paid until the 28th.. and Im completly skint at the moment (well.. almost).

I think I have a fair ammount of work ahead of me... and no driveway :(

Wheels were all changed over on Monday morning before I went to work. I ended up being 8 minutes late, but I think it was worth it!
Set off, and went straight to the petrol station and filled up to the brim, reset the trip clock and set off for work.

So far this week, I have been staying between 50 and 60 when cruising, and getting up to 85ish going down hills in order to pick up speed for the hill coming up, before coasting along at the very bottom of the hill, then letting my speed ease off as I reached the top, before starting the whole process again (it's not a particularly level motorway :( ).

That, and changing over the wheels (the spare one in the boot to, as well as making sure the tyres are properly inflated) really seem to have made a difference! Normally at this time in the week, my fuel tank would be half empty (or half full ;) ), however, as you can see below,it seems to only be just under a quarter empty (I'm aware that as said,it might not be linear, but seeing as that gauge is all I have to go on, I'm willing to use it!).

I've been taking pictures at the start of each journey (I don't think I did it at the petrol station after filling up though :( ) as well as at the end to see how the fuel level is going down.

Very :D

Seems to be no difference between getting home Monday, and setting off home on Tuesday evening! That's almost an entire day of free fuel! ;)

The Panda is like that for me, the first day hardly wakes the gauge, then it does a Tom Daly and dives or empty.

I'm aiming for @130 more miles, but might go for 170 depending on how the roads are.

I have to say MEP will kill me if I squeeze 450 out of a tank :D :ROFLMAO:

Come on guys, all this talk of full, half full, quarter full doesn't help me. Call me old fashioned if you like, I want mpg figures.:) You know pencil and paper, take the miles divide by the gallons stuff. Like I did in the post further back!

Of course make an allowance for me, I went to school in the 60s!!

Dear old Fashioned if you like :p

does this log help, bear in mind each fill up has been to brim the tank :D

Now I know it's litres not gallons, but here's the conversion rate - 1 gal(UK) = 4.54609 L

So you can sharpen up that old pencil :D :D

Exactly, what excellent mpg. Although we have km and litres here when I think economy I still think in MPG.

So I convert the km per litre to mpg.

Ever since I was an apprentice mechanic I have done what you do with every car and truck I have had. Just a habit I got in to which used to let me know when the tune was going off. That was the days of my 68 Alfa Guilia TI and the Mark 3 Zephyr!

Come on UCOF what are the figures.

Taken before setting off home this evening (no idea where this mornings "arrived at work" one has gone, I know for a fact I took it, but it is no longer on my phone :( )

This is when I got home tonight (had to go a mile or two extra to visit the garage to get my wheels balanced).

So, if I'm right:
32 litre tank ~= 7.04 gallons (32/ 4.54609 = 7.039015946 ) when full.
7.04/17 ~= 0.41 (7.04 gallons when full divided by each mark on the gauge)
10 x 0.41 ~= 4.1 (10 notches on the gauge times what each notch represents fuel volume wise)
196.5 / 4.1 ~= 47.9 (distance travelled so far divided by how much fuel I have used)

So, according to my calculations, I currently achieve 47.9 MPG (give or take a little)

....I think.
