I have an `89 uno 45 with a leaky fuel sender unit. I bought one off ebay, genuine BNIB, and according to my research the part No fits all carb models 83 on. But looking again at pics it seems to be a plain round body at the top - ie without the 6 `bayonet` tabs which locate in the hole in my tank. My question: are there 2 types of tank, are the plastic ones different to metal, which ones have a circular retaining ring? Any info welcomed as it seems this new unit is completely wrong (not arrived yet)

Ideally need photos of your old one and the replacement, generally older types use studs and nuts to hold in tank whether steel or plastic tank and most newer plastic tank type units have a round plastic ring /nut that hold unit in tank with a large O ring to seal it.
I have fitted a few of those type on Punto and Doblos 03 onwards. However the plastic nut can be hard to unscrew and sometimes difficult to re engage on threads on tank so care required not to damage threads in tank.
Mind you equally studs can become disengaged in tank, so if nuts and stud type then advise soak in releasing oil prior to job.
Much earlier vehicles had a metal ring that had slopes that engaged with tank lip to secure on a slope so you had to tap the ring around so it released from the slope.:)

Thanks for your reply. The original fits in a steel tank, circular hole with 6 cut-outs which align with the 6 tabs on sender. Like a bayonet fitting?

The new one (which hasn`t arrived yet) seems to be a plain round case, as though it is retained by a ring of some kind

Does the 2nd type fit the plastic tank or something? The part No shows as fitting ALL uno 999s `83 to `95. Also All the tanks on ebay seem to have the 6 cut out hole - except the inj. ones which are a rounded off rectangle with studs.... Any ideas?

Is there any chance the new plastic one can operate like a bayonet fitting like yours, I can't see clear enough from the picture?
I did a quick search and even back several years ago a Forum member was discussing the different choices of tanks .
This was in 2009! :-

"OK - are we talking about a plastic tank or a steel tank?
I gather that the Mk2 Uno ('89-) has a steel tank. The Mk1 Uno after '86 has a plastic tank."
"

Which Uno do you have?

I think there are 4 main types of metal tank, depending on your Uno..

Petrol Carb, (most UK Unos before Aug 1992) with mechanical pump,
Petrol injection (non turbo) (most UK Unos after Aug 1992) with in tank electric fuel pump,
Turbo IE with out of tank electric fuel pump,
Diesel (don't know suspect mechanical pump).

Get one off an Uno with similar fuel delivery if you can find one."

I am sorry I don't know enough to advise further, I am sure there is a Forum Member with the details. Have you tried Eper?

Many thanks for your help, sorry for my delayed reply, was rather hoping the new sender would come yesterday and I could see what`s what.... It is bewildering. Haynes talk about early mpdels having a sender with retaining ring until `84 when they had plastic tanks! Mine is an `89 with a metal tank & bayonet fitting so Haynes are completely wrong. I`ll just have to see what comes in the post, at the moment I`ve smothered the perimeter of sender with silicone, I know it won`t last but at least it`ll keep the smell down till it comes off the road for winter. Incidentally this will be its 3rd sender. I have an older Ford with basically the same arrangement for the sender, tabs which locate in tank, bayonet fashion, never been a problem. The difference is, that`s made of steel so it can stand long term stress whereas the Fiat`s is plastic and over time deforms due to constant stress and the pressure on the gasket relaxes. Annoying.
