Smart traffic lights which turn red if approaching drivers are speeding are to be trialled in Britain.

The council which stripped out all its speed cameras is testing the new lights.
Swindon will start the trials in the Autumn on two sites in the town where speeding has been identified as a problem. It will be the first authority in the country to do so.

The lights work by placing a sensor in the road a short distance ahead of the traffic light which logs how fast traffic is going.

If cars are going too fast then a message is sent to a control box, which turns the light to red.

Automatic number plate recognition cameras are used to detect emergency vehicles.

Not sure thats a good idea, speeding car doesn't have time to stop or looses control trying to stop ... :chin:

I guess it depends how far away the sensor is.

On the top of red lights though, it would be good if the UK implemented "Turn left on Red" and also the "Flashing Red / Flashing Yellow" for quiet times.

Personally think it's a good idea. Rewards drivers for not speeding, punishes those that do. much better than having a camera.

Only thing is if you want to race someone, just speed upto the lights, and they do the lights for you ready to go.

On way way to work if I stick rigidly to the speed limits I get stopped by every set of traffic lights, if I do around 35 though, I can get through them all while they're green and not have to stop until I'm almost out of town, thus saving time and petrol.

Didnt know you could get up to 35mph around Huddersfield Ring Road

ahh thats why! it chaos from 8 till 7. especially at the end of the tunnel on the ring road. takes me and hour to get to Hud from Wakefield 30mins of that coming from Lepton. :'(

Aye tell me about it, I used to work at Fujitsu (right behind the bus station in Wakey) and even when I was working 1pm-9pm still had to leave home at midday to get there on time, ridiculous.

aye, behind Trinity Walk now, know the place. It takes about 20mins for me to get from Crofton where i live to huddersfield, go the back roads around flockton & emley. but its like none off the traffic lights are synced in huddersfield!

its a great idea,however as i have posted before
I go through(well stop) at a set of lights on the way to work
if you approach at the limit or slower,they chnage to red before you get to them(no traffic on the other directions)
speed and you can make it through

Pretty sure there are some of these about already. Locally to me theres some that if you or someone else speeds towards it it changes to red and very quickly back to green again.
