Is it worth me cleaning the map sensor?
Yes.

Also be worth posting a picture of you spark plugs. According to the readings they should be black (rich) as the ECU is trying but can’t manage to take enough fuel away. I suspect that will not be the case.
I’ve found where it is it’s on the right hand side when standing in front of the car not the left as I was told.
That surprises me. I had a 2005 dynamic and that was on the left

Is yours cable operated by any chance

Yes.

Will do that tomorrow if your referring to the throttle yes I’m sure it’s cable operated.

That’s no problem hopefully have an update today.
Been out today map sensor squeaky clean and plugs looked ok not black. I’m thinking it’s misfiring you can feel it on idle and hear the exhaust popping and if you increase revs slightly you can also feel it and still hear it. I did watch the live data on the short term fuel trim for some time and it does occasionally drop down to -0.03% but then it increases back up. Thanks

great MAP sensor clean

Misfire should put the long term fuel trims positive as the oxygen not used is pushed passed the O2 sensor

Let’s assume we have a misfire and the scan tool is misleading

Switch the engine off. Pull the number 1 cylinder HT lead off the coil pack start the engine. Switch off and replace

Then do the same for the other cylinders HT leads

The lead or leads that make no or little difference is the cylinder that aren’t firing correctly. Any that make it worse we’re firing okay

Don’t run it too long with a lead disconnect a few seconds is enough. Technically your spray petrol down the exhaust.

Ok thank you for your time I will try this sometime tomorrow.

Nobody's mentioned valve timing has the belt jumped a tooth or two.
the belt was done about 18 months ago by Fiat and maybe they haven’t lined it up correctly is there a way for me to check the timing? Thanks for your input.

Visual check you have to take the covers off

Or

Compression test.

I take it not been running bad for 18 months

Not sure how long it’s been like this as it was my mothers car and she has had it from new and regular had it serviced and had the belt changed it’s done 34000 miles but has not really been driven for the last 12 months my daughter has been given the car but I’m using it at the moment and noticed it’s not running correctly. I will do the coil testing today, can I ask will the car still start and if so do I listen for a second or 2 then turn it straight off and which order do the coils go please? Thanks

Yes

The car will start on 3 cylinders and run fairly smoothly. You can hear the difference both under the bonnet and at the exhaust. I posted a video somewhere I will see if I can find it

The car will start on 2 cylinder but the engine will rock about a lot.

Ok a bit of an update car in my opinion ran ok when disconnecting each of the leads at the coil end but I did notice at the spark plug end they where very loose I tried to push them back on but still didn’t feel right. I then removed a plug and pushed the lead on which was hard work but it did click on so I tried again what a nightmare they don’t feel as loose but to me they’re not on properly. Is it correct no.1 plug is the timing belt end? If so plug 1 and 4 leads are the wrong way round I’ve swapped them anyway. The car seams to be a lot better but not as it should be. I’ve added a pic of the plugs they do look a bit black sorry.

Correct 1 is timing belt end

Lead at plugs should be very tight

What’s the gap like ? If you haven’t got any feeler gauges we can probable use something household such as coins if a 1p fits and so on

Yes I have feeler gauges no the leads at plugs not very tight and when I pulled it off plug 4 I had a cloud of brown stuff not sure if it was dust or smoke though. Thanks

Not correct they should be very tight

In fact people often struggle to take them off and there are special pliers to make the job easier

They should push down with a positive click

Cloud of brown stuff sound like it arcing inside the leads. What do they look like if you shine a torch down them

Not sure about the other 3 but the one I took off was brown inside I will inspect them tomorrow yes I agree about the arching do you think this is because the leads are loose? Do you know what the pliers look like and I could get some and try and pop them on properly. I think it might be worth getting a set of plugs and if no luck with leads possibly replace them. Does it fire 4, 1, 3, 2 starting with 4 from nearest the bulkhead. Thanks again for your time.

The right side of the engine but the left side of the throttle body. Run it without the sensor connected . The engine will revert to a 'base' fuel map stored in the ECU. That should change the readings?

I never use them but if you search

HT boot spark plug pliers

should come up with some options

Not an essential tool. But handy
