Shell tanker drivers

Shell tanker drivers

i think all this strike stuff is bo ox if the government were too cut the tax by even just 10p per liter it would still see something like 40p+ tax on every liter but at the same time would steadly reduce the cost of every thing , its the fuel costs that bump up every thing

shell,bp,esso, murco all of them sell there fuel to within 5ppl to most of europe its the tax that brings us too this obsurd level of fuel pricing

as for the danger's of being a hgv driver yeah ok so there is a risk but no more than they guy who deliverys for tnt dhl or them guys who when you go to post office at 2pm and say this needs delivering in the morning and it turns up the next morning ,

i weld on refinerys, nuclear power stations, coal power stations, gas stations and bio fuel power stations now you see some scary stuff on these kind of places i can work upwards of 70hrs aweek work in the rain snow freezing temps to temps of 45c+ , i can also on my own shut down a powerstation cause millions of pounds worth of damage cut an entire community of power . i have witnessed a pole fall to his death a plater lose his legs and numerous guys lose full fingers and half fingers and do we ask for 13% beacause of the risks no we get on its a risk assosiated industry our wages have rose about 7% in the last 8 or 9 yrs we cover roughly 4 miles of walking aday moving welding equipment pipe work have a 40 min break on 8 hr shifts and 1hr on 12hr shifts nights or days public holidays are all classed as working days if the job requires it ..

i think they should get in the trucks and bring out the petrol accept the risks or become bed testers for hotels and silent night

Similar scenario when your filling a car I suppose, as petrol vapours are present, albeit on a smaller scale, Vapours from Avgas & Jet A1 are less volatile.

& it doesnt have to be mobile phones which cause ignition, ciggies, spark from a car starter motor & even static from clothing can do the trick.

that was on mythbusters also and it was just a myth.

So that means that every person filling up their car at a petrol station is exposed to the same risks that you are? Only difference being that we're filling up our cars whilst you're filling up the station?

I can't get why YOU can't see the arguments put forward by other people in this thread. Other jobs have just as many risks, if not more than tanker drivers. Other jobs require the same level of skills and training, if not far, far more. Other jobs have unsociable hours of work and demanding targets to meet. Many, if not the majority of these jobs pay less than tanker drivers are getting.

To suggest that others in demanding/ skilled/ high risk jobs are in the wrong profession and should demand higher wages if they are unhappy is a very lame way of justifying tanker drivers wage demands. Yes, they carry flammable liquids, yes they require skills to drive an HGV and yes they need to know the safety aspects of what they do. We know that, and we know many other jobs have just as many requirements and pay less. People aren't unhappy about being paid less in other jobs (to a certain extent), but they do see tanker drivers as being greedy in comparison.

Some people support them, whilst I think I am safe in saying the majority do not. Most, including myself, think the drivers are taking an unfair advantage of the current fuel crisis and are just being greedy and manipulative. The level of training required, the cost for the training and the risks involved do not justify a £40K salary when compared with other jobs. I don't think the other jobs pay poorly, I think the tanker drivers are just being greedy.

Don't get me wrong, I have the utmost respect for HGV drivers across the board and appreciate the work they do. But I do believe that tanker drivers should realise just how good they have it. If they don't, then when the contracts come up for renewal there's a good chance that Shell will give the tanker driver contracts to another company instead and those demanding big pay rises may find themselves scraping by on the dole rather than on the £40K they so desire.

This thread will continue to go round and round in circles so this is my last say on the matter. Over and out.

Static definately can, and is the cause of most petrol station fires I dare say?

cigarette butts aren't hot enough to light fuel, and the mobile phone thing is also a myth

They don't get stressed out waiting for loads as no-one can blame them if they're late going out. When it comes to unloading, again there's little or no problems there either and no load to pick up. Yes, there is an inherrant risk in driving round with 20+ tonnes of petrol in the back, I wouldn't have minded being paid £30K in
1984.

You're way off the mark there mate....Every job is allocated a time(to load, travel & tip) & we're routed 11 hours per day , this is made up of timed blocks(ie=1st run 3 hrs, 2nd run 3hre & 3rd run 5 hrs...total 11 hours, so when we get to the terminal to load & find a one hour delay due to a queue for the loading gantries...thats when it all goes to pot, because we're late getting out!!

Same applies when you turn up at joe blogs haulage co.& find vans parked around the tank area, 20 minutes to gain access...more time lost!!

The next load will be drawn from the nearest terminal/depot(fuel firm all draw from each other)..so that covers the load to pick up you mention!

Its nice to see someone aware of the risk factor though, some on here have demanded evidence!...lack of common sense methinks!

I assume you meant 1994...thats the year I started with Hoyer, made about £21k that year...dont believe all you read in the press, or guesswork from those who know nothing.

no it can cause sparks but not sparks that blow you up whilst filling up with petrol.

you seem to be only replying to cetrain posts in this thread and not answering the vital ones:confused:

it's a syndrome that effects people talking up their jobs and wanting more money for essentially doing nothing special, want to see some hard work?

try a nurse in a psyche unit holding down a raving loonjob trying to strangle her, but she cant defend herself (her right taken away) because the health trust says the patients rights come first...pay...about half yours

teacher....being threatened, abused and assaulted by a class of kids..cant do a thing about it the schools on the kids side....pay...about half yours

do us a favour ed, stop the blah, we've figured you're a bull****ting internet warrior with nothing to do but big up a cushy number, get off it, and move it

A lit ciggy being smoked near petrol vapours will ignite them!

Again u skip all the big posts pointing out where you are going wrong and pick a little one that you think you know the answer to and try and convince people you are right.

try answering some of the other questions on here then people may take you seriously. At the moment you are doing the internet equivalent of going "look over there" and then running away.

maybe some responses to the above?

£42k+ a year.....and still moaning like a little girl with a skinned knee.

you want more? for what exactly? doing a job that was advertised, and applyed for? where ongoing changes are made clear and are there to be followed? you go on about this procedure, and that target, and having to do the other.....welcome to the new millenium....everyone has a target, everyone is judged, you don't like it...or the pay...quit, i dare you, i double dare you, you know why you won't? 2 reasons

1) you're a loud mouth slag chicken **** who has no idea how the real world works, picks on the dets he might be able to pass off, and ignores the rest

2) for £40k a year, shell puts it's out they'll be snowed under with applications
