For driving as im sure you know its 90 hours in two weeks the limit i think, but thats driving, not physically being signed at work

In the above example you might be at work 55 hours a week (if true) maybe but how many of that 55 hours will you have been driving? When you fashion your breaks/rest and when you are working e.g loading unloading etc etc into it the total driving hours surely come down?

In that example above i bet if you actually looked into it deeply the actual hours are within the legal limits despite them appearing illegal

Vosa wouldnt have a problem with it IMO with someone doing 55 hours per week at work every week unless the driving time exceeded the limits

The actual working time for HGV driving is an average of 48 hours per week over a period of time, this could be over 17 weeks or 26 weeks. However, you can be asked to work up to 15 hours a day and have only 9 hours rest before going into work again. Your rest period can only be reduced to 9 hours once a week and I think it can be 10 hours twice a week. Legal minimum rest period is 11 hours between shifts. The maximum driving time per day is 10 hours. On top of this you have none driving work eg loading / unloading, vehicle checks and paperwork. Starting before 4 AM is classed by most companies as nights. You will still be expected to do a minimum of 12 hours a day. Again most companies do a continental shift pattern of 4 days on, 4 days off. A number also swap drivers between days and nights, eg 4 days, 4 days off then 4 nights. By the way, wher I work day shift starts from 12.30 AM. So you literally get up before going to bed having managed maybe 3 hours proper sleep before the first working day and then have to drive for upto 10 hours. If I'm going to the South coast - Hastings maybe, then it will be a 14 hour day - on 3 hours sleep.

Now your tanker driver is driving a vehicle with a gross weight of 44 tonnes of highly flammable moving liquid. On his first shift he needs to stay awake, concentrate and be fully aware of the hazards his load represents - all this on maybe 3 hours sleep. As we all know the roads are full of plebs that cut up trucks, speed, overtake dangerously etc. These guys also have to comply with the law to a far greater depth than most other people. They so much as sneeze at the wrong time, they can lose their licence, or worse be arrested and in the courts. If their grief is purely to do with safety issues then I think we need to listen to them before a major accident happens.

Incidentally, a couple of years ago at 5.00AM, I overtook an oil tanker on the A14. 3 seconds later he ploughed into the back of a stationary artic in lane one. He was doing 56mph, I was doing 70. I could hear the impact as I saw it happen in my mirror. If he was carrying fuel, not oil then there would have been a lot of dead bodies around.
 
last time there was panic buying theft from peoples cars went up, people know nearly everyone has a full tank so keep an eye out. locking cap wont stop them they cut a hole in the bottom of the tank.

Other than the inconvenience it'd cause all they'd get out of the Stilo is about 6L from one tank and a massive explosion from the other along with frost burns :p

Will be interesting to see how quickly the thefts start happening though :(
 
and how much will your earn then?

Probably not a whole lot more at first, my point is they shouldn't moan about what they are earning, there's people earning much less than they are. I am just grateful I have a job.

I bet they want to be paid more to work on a bank holiday too?!? No chance, its 2013! Not many have that privilege anymore.

there is also people earning a lot more for less hours and less risk and spending most of their working day on the internet instead of working
 
I just lost my job after 2 years of working there without them batting an eyelid. I was earning way under 10 grand at 21. When i leave uni (its open uni so i dont **** country girls all day and get wasted) ill be able to get a job which is around 20k starting, people who moan about pay should be grateful that they have a job, wtf do i do now with a car to pay for and uni to pay for? ****ing stupid theres always someone worse of than you are
 
I graduated in 2011, I've had the same job since 2008, none of this "I can't work I'm a student" rubbish. Up at 6:30am, leave parents house for uni at 7:30, arrive at uni at 8:30, start at 9, leave for work at 5, start work at 5:45 through to whenever, then coursework after that. My course was based on 5 day intensives last for 2 weeks, about 3 times a year, and 1, 2 or 3 days outside of intensives.

Uni was a 20 mile drive each way for me. I retained my job throughout uni and am still working at the same place. I am looking for industry work though, most days I have a look. I don't have any uni debt because my parents earned under the threshold making my education very very cheap.

Oh yes, I passed uni with a 2:1!
 
its a disgrace.

they have a no brainer job and get paid way too much for it.

what was the point of going to university when i could have paid much less for a class1 license and sat on my arse all day instead.

i think £25k is a fair salary for driving a tanker. i dont understand why they get so much more.
? contray to what has already been said a full ADR package licence only last 5 years retraining is getting more difficult and if you want monkeys driving these bombs, fine just make sure your not in the vicinity when a monkey gets it wrong and whips out a town block. "no brainer" really so who actually picked the wrong line of work if money is the bee all? me i am a transport manager and no i don't earn anywhere near 41k but i work 50 to 60 hours a week, who are you to say what an hgv driver should earn when you don't know how many hours they could be working?
if you say an artic driver is on £10 an hour [ which frankly is the lower end] x 40 and say 15 hours at time an half that's already 31k plus. and remember nobody is stopping you from spending thousands taking your hgv and having to do a cpc every 5 years or your adr training too....
What is a disgrace is that far far too many jobs these days seem to need a degree today! which they didn't need before! Hell kids have to stay on 2 extra years now,why?
 
i'm not sure LandieMan you're looking at this in the context of the protest these drivers have.

you earn under £10,000 a year ok so your boss decides to effectively cut your wages by £1000 a year which costs you £50,000 off your pension when you reach retirement?

you're 23 (I think i saw in another thread?) so can be expected to work till you are 68-70 something like that (probably more) so over the next 40 years you are out £1000 a year and £50,000 at the end of it so your employer has taken £90,000 away from you without you having any choice or say in the matter.

do you think thats fair? £90,000 out of your pocket, you are lucky to have a job but is that any reason for an employer to take money away from you? now consider its BP its not like they are a struggling small business that needs to cut costs, i think they are pretty justified.


out of curiosity, what is your degree and why are you plodding along in a sub-10k a year job ?

Just haven't been lucky. My degree is Television Production.

I don't think we should all be paid equal and I am eternally grateful that I have a job and I am working, however when you think how much work many people put into a degree, including myself, its a bit disheartening. I spent £500 on my practical dissertation, the paperwork ended up at around 500 pages!

Thats a lot of work, a lot of love and man hours, and I am not alone. Please be aware I am not moaning about my job, I enjoy my job, and get along fine in it, I just feel disheartened about the work I put in.
