Technical shatered ring gear help

Hi father has an 02 punto 1.2 16v dynamic with the auto box.

So had a noisy starter and put it in for an exchange unit noise was still there so bit the bullet and put it in the garage they say that the ring gear has shattered and that its went into the box and only cure is replacement box.

Any help an if this could happen and a box is required

Can't see the starter ring gear getting into the box. Should be visible if you remove the inspection panel at the sump/gearbox interface.

While replacement means removing the box and flywheel, that's a far cheaper job than gearbox replacement.
