Evening all,

Firstly - milky bars are on me!

So I have had my little 1.9d for a few months now - great little van from DIY and bombing around town in, however it has developed some running issues recently (n)

(I would post a video but I am not allowed?!)

I have already changed the advance and stop solenoids on the fuel pump along with the fuel filter. This didn't help with the problem so today I have exchanged the crankshaft sensor which seems to have improved the situation slightly but its still rough as fook! after changing the sensor I gave the van a good run and once it got up to temperature it was idling much better, however after I left it for 30min to cool down it was back to its old smokey self!

any ideas?????

Cheers Stu

should be relatively "talkative" - with the correct kit, :)

:idea:may well be that it's not sensing temperature well / accurately,

does the temp gauge warm in 5 to 10 mins , and sit near half-way..??

It warms up to just above 70c on tick over and goes to half way once you are driving around.

Has that got the hdi in it or what i refer to as an xud which is now called a dw10?

Sorry re-read the post.1.9d.Its got xud with lucas epic pump.My guess would be its running retarded on tickover.

1,has the timing belt slipped.

2,has the advance and retard on the bottom of the pump siezed up,its controlled by fuel pressure.

3,has it got needle position sensor on no1 injector, for advance and retard functions.

4,has the cam ring broke up in the pump.

Make sure the fuel is good. Diesel not petrol.
Check for fault codes. Check timing belt timing.
Check for air leaks on fuel lines up to injection pump.
One thing I've seen several times and could be worth trying is the cat becomes blocked causing huge back pressure, remove the egr pipe off the inlet manifold body to release pressure and engine will run ok.

Update - today I took the egr valve off and give it a good clean. This didn't make any difference to the rough running and I noticed the it was not closing?

Also the symptoms only seems to occurred a few minutes after the engine has been running? At the point of rough running you can see a lot of air in the fuel line between the filter and pump. Seems strange that this happens after a few minutes

So timing is okay,

It seems weird that the engine will tick over fine for a few minutes then start missfiring????

I checked the EGR valve and its is permantly open? There is a vacumm on the pipe but its not enough to close the plate? However even with the plate manually shut it makes no difference.

I am confused to why it will run fine for a bit then starts spluttering?!

have you fully investigated, and ruled out the 4 points made by buster..??

Reading through this post I'd just mention that my 1.9 el (2000 reg) is doing a similar thing. Starts first turn of the key, no smoke and then couple of minutes in it starts to stutter occasionally. No loss of power when I put my foot down and no smoke on open road. Once engine is warmed up issue subsides. Thought it was cheap fuel a whole back and added a bunch of fuel additives to up the octanes and clear any deposits on injectors. Gonna get the timing belt done soon and have the injectors looked at. Read about the pin in injector one causing issues on a Citroen dispatch. Will follow this post to see if any fixes are found.
