Looking for any advice with the problem that I have with my Scudo 1.9d EL
2003 model.
On a cold morning it really struggles to start I have to hold the key in contantly turning the starting motor with the excelerator on the floor and it does eventually start. I heat the glow plugs up a few times before starting and its has new glowplugs and battery fitted.
After the first start of a cold morning it will start first time with no problems but the next morning its the same old problem.
Any advice would be much appreciated.

Hi Charlie,
The glowplug light goes out after about 10 seconds and does not flash after the engine eventually starts.

Hi worth checking Valve Clearances they get closed up can make cold starting hard
i work on diesels for a living and find it a lot on older diesels that have done 80,000 plus
Regards Dave

diesel might be running back into tank after standing over night. is starter turning over fast or slow.

Still having this problem with mine. Warm(ish) day fires instantly as it does after the cold starts. After a cold night will not have any of it...so far on my 3rd can of Easy Start. Mechanic says no fault codes so glow plugs must be OK. Its done 200Kmiles on the same glow plugs. Advice here from Big Dong is to change them. Hearing here and elsewhere it could be Glow plug timer not in long enough (can it be adjusted-where is it) Valve clearances, and deisel running back. Cannot bring myself to expense of all plugs replaced all the while I can get it going with the Easy Start...I was hoping a fault code might appear soon to confirm? Mechanic told me using Easy Start will do no damage-even suggested using anti perspirant spray...then have a sweet smelling engine thats NFG in the cold! :bang:

only thing with easy start engines get used to it all right using in emergency but not all the time

Problem with easystart it can break piston rings seen it to often on diesels on dumper trucks and cerment mixers

YES - I've heard horror stories of "easy-start" in diesel applications too,.

OP,
if your light goes out after 10 seconds , and doesn't flash once running then the plugs are probably fine, especially if cycling the heat into them makes no difference,
I had also considered a fuel drain-back issue,
have you had fault codes read / cleared..??,
Charlie

Had the Mechanic out, comes highly recommended & specialises in diesel, he performed injector pressure tests, went through with analyser and there were no fault codes, the glow plugs were reading the right resistances. The Taxi starts some days, but not others after standing in cold while I am asleep. When he came over to sort it flipping thing started first time!!! His workshop is a good few miles away in the middle of nowhere-only way he can diagnose is to have it left overnight, which means I have to get there before he closes to leave it, losing a nights work and get back home, then find my way over there again if its fixed, or knowing my luck it will start first time again:bang::bang::bang::bang:

Hi Dave I'm going to take the van into my local garage who fitted the new glow plugs and leave it overnight so that they can see how it starts in the morning I will mention the valve clearance and see if they can check it, is it s straight forward check for them?

Hi I have tried pumping the fuel pump button and no bubbles appeared in the fuel line and it did not help with the start problem but i'm not sure if that would eliminate a fuel problem as the cause.

cheers
