Technical Rev counter

Technical Rev counter

Hi,
A few steps to go through when changing to the cinq sporting clocks...

1. Get yourself some sporting clocks and change the speedo for your original unit, to keep the mileage correct etc. Next you will need to connect the signal wire to the rev counter, this can be done by either soldering a connection direct to the dash clocks as I have done or splicing in a sporting wiring loom connector. I fitted a bullet connector for ease of removal/refitting if ever needed.

2. Make provisions for the rev counter signal cable to run through to the engine bay, I drilled a 1/4" hole in the bulk head behind the instrument pod.

3. Find a suitable path for the cable to run, the signal wire will need to run from the fuel pump relay just behind the MAP sensor to the dashboard, I fitted a fuse in case of accidents, currently running 3amps but will be changing to 500mAmps when I find a suitable holder.

4. You will need to connect in to the Black/Violet wire on the fuel pump relay, its the thinest wire on the relay closest to the MAP sensor.

5. After double checking your wiring and securing all new cables, you should have a working rev counter....

Please see attached piccy's on the subject....

Thanks
Paul T

Ooh that easy? Easier than building a bespoke tacho! Also, if I cock it up you're not a million miles away Paul! :D

Well i fitted a sei sporting rev counter and apart from it deciding it didnt want to work yesterday its simpleish depending whta youve done before ive done alarms, foglamps etc so this is nothing really as a guide though if you go on a scale of 1-5 and wiring in a amp for sub etc is rated at 3 then this would be at 2.

I finally got to try it out today and found out that i dont drive my cinq hard enough as normal driving round town im changing up at 3500 revs and a cinq engine doesnt perform till 5000, got to say though i which id done this two years ago its brilliant.

Just got to mould all the top dash pod now so the rev counter pod smoothes into it and then make some dial daces for my speedo etc to match the seicento rev counter.

Lovely. I can do ICE installs! Much easier than burning my hands on the soldering iron! :D

Can I ask though, does the temp gauges work aswell as the rev counter?

Should do. May be a problem if your cinq doesn't come with a temp gauge as standard..........

Mine doesnt have a temp gauge but some 899 S cinqs do? which is wierd....
I guess my temp gauges wont work then if I put sporting clocks in?

Do you have a late cinq? If you don't have a temp guage as standard then no, the temp guage on the sporting clocks wouldn't work as there would be no electronics to drive the guage on the sporting clocks. Don't know if you can retro fit a temp guage.........

Hi,
Should be a case of just swap the sender unit for a variable type rather than a switch type used in later cinq 899cc, mine has a red top sender on the cylinder head and works with the sporting clocks, but does seem to read a few degree's lower than it did with the standard clocks.... , maybe there is a different sender unit specially for the sporting model....?

Thanks

Have you had a go at sorting the temp gauge on your clocks yet Paul? I think I'll have a go at fitting sporting clocks, but I don't think I'm good enough at electronics to figure stuff like this out! :D

Hi,
Nah, it just reads a bit low, I can live with that......if the temp sender packs in I'll look at it then, but for now it stays as is..

Thanks

cheers paul will this work with an aftermarket rev counter?
I got an auto guage one which is currently running off the lower wire on the ignition coil
Thinking i could connect it to the map sensor wire you mentioned instead and this would give me full revs
is this right?

I know I'm gonna sound a bit thick, but does the fuel gauge work OK? - I could live with the temp reading a few degrees lower - all I use it for is to see if the engine's at normal temperature!

As far as i can remember when looking a a scrappers its the same fuel guage so cant see any reason why it would have a different sender unit so surely it would work the same

Just try it or be adventurous and fit full seicento clocks i was gonna do this but discovered they dont have temp guages which is a bit s**t

Hi,
Yeah fuel gauge works fine, tanks are the same on all cinq's so are the pumps, so nothing to worry about there..

Thanks

Hi,
I'm not entirely sure, but you could give it a go, other people have said if they connected the sporting rev counter to the coil it gave half reading as your aftermarket rev counter does, so it sounds as if they work on the same principle. The wire is already in the engine bay, so you haven't got to move it very far..

ps. Its the fuel pump relay wire(Black/Violet) next to the map sensor, not on the map sensor itself. (y)

Thanks

IT WORKED!!!!
cheers mate
worked with my auto guage tacho
thanks for the help

I have been tryint to get a rev counter on my sei for ova a yr.
