Axle stands are ok on planks to stop them skidding/sinking and with chocks under the wheels that are still on the floor. The nasty bit is getting it jacked up/down safe & sound. But at least if it does fall you wont be under it.

Finished replacing my MK2 mani-cat and noticed small amounts of white smoke and a smell of burning, is this anything other than the new cat "bedding in"?

Thanks for all the help guys gona pick up the parts tomorrow hope fully gust spent the whole day out in the rain done all the not checks so its only the cat to do now. After the not I want to clean the rocker cover I'm thinking brillo pads I can remember using them to polish the internals of my paintball gun but I don't want it shiny just clean.

Gunk remover and a clean cloth removed all the oil and other crap stuck on the engine for me, would be worth buying.

It's unlikely to fall off axle stands, but if you can, put something (old wheels with tyres on are good) underneath the car so it can't fall off and crush you.

i use axle stands under the front subframe on these mk2's but the other day i had one up in the air ready to put the body dozer under it and with a good trolley jack at each side and it spit one out ,so be very careful ,i always give them a good push before i get under any car just in case
(known 2 people die from car crush injuries in my life)

All the tips have been so helpful I had the car tip over a while ago just as I was about to go under it it $*** me up so this time there was no short cuts when checking the gaters 2 Alex stands poped the wheels under the sills and oviously a mate on hand

This why I think exhausts (and clutches for that matter) are best left to the pros who have a proper car lift and all the necessary tools to burn off seized and snapped bolts.

actually i disagree
op ask s for advice and we give it and hes taken it on board
in my opinion i would rather see someone get down and get under and learn rather than pay someone else to do the same possibly badly
