Hi, someone has tried to nick my 09 1.2 Panda, and in the process they have broken off the ignition barrel. I'm trying to figure out my options, so I'm looking in to how I could fix it myself.

The car has remote locking and I'd like to keep it that way if at all possible. I've done a bit of reading and have come up with this, am I on the right track?

- Buy a second hand igntion barrel with matching remote key
- Dissasemble both remote keys, and swap the blade from the new key in to the body of my current key
- Fit the new ignition barrel to the steering column

Am I right in saying this would work for both the ignition and the remote locking? Supposedly the immobiliser transponder is part of the PCB in the remote keys, so to me that suggests it should work.

Obviously I'd have to keep an old to work in the door locks, I'm fine with that.

ta, Alex

Should work.
Why not get the full set of locks? They're pretty easy to change over.
If you do, don't forget the airbag switch barrel - especially if your tailgate lock barrel is a bit ropey. Another easy swap, use the old corroded tailgate one in the airbag switch (after freeing it off a bit)

I doubt you will find a barrel and key secondhand

Most breaker sell them as a complete set

ECU
Body computer
Lock set
Dash
Keys

Selling the keys and ignition barrel means they are left with a useless ECU and body computer

A new lock set is a about £15-25
You would still need to get a new blade cut for the old remote by a lock smith

Are you sure the bit the barrel sits in isn't also damaged, the last one that was attempted theft was

TBH the two breakers that I tend to use most don't bother taking out ECUs and lock sets on 169 Pandas any more, and only bother on 500s if they are later low mileage high-spec ones. Standard 1.2s head straight off to get weighed in with almost nothing removed.

I've got hardly any left near me

Two in kidsgrove shut
Car transplants Nantwich, very large gone

Still a few in stoke on Trent and a farm in Crewe but they only have 20 or so older cars, useful as they only know one word so almost everything is a fiver,

Thanks for the help folks.

I suppose i dont actually mean the ignition barrel, I mean the whole ignition unit, the plastic thing with the steering lock as well. They broke the original one in half, I'm pretty sure the damage is limited to that part though.

Not having a driveable car makes getting to breakers a hassle, and I don't really know which ones near me are any good - I haven't lived here long enough. There are a few listing on eBay for this ignition unit with a set of keys, that's what I was thinking of getting. I don't really fancy swapping door locks as well, I'd rather not mess with things that are working fine, though it looks like there are sets that include the door locks as well so I could do it at a later date.

Glad to hear that I've understood this stuff correctly, thanks again for the help

They are held on with shear bolts

You have to drill or chisel them off

I suspect new would be the better option

There about £30 but still needs the barrels

@irc might know more

@fiatireland went through the same pain, unfortunately they not logged in for awhile as they could steer you in the right direction

The shear bolts aren't an issue, I had to replace my steering column (and yes it was not just the battery or cabling, the steering column electronics had died).

I hadn't actually realised that the real key barrel (the metal bit) can be separated from the plastic housing, and since it was snapped off I'd assumed the whole thing was destroyed. This was just after I'd found the car so I wasn't thinking so clearly!

The barrel itself actually seems totally fine, they must have gone straight to snapping off the plastic bit. So I should be able to just get the steering lock assembly that's linked in that other thread and be good to go! That's really helpful, really appreciate the info
