Firstly where are the glow plugs located on an Stilo jtd 115? Secondly how to i get to/ remove them? please help, cheers

Right at the far back, close to the inlet manifold. (or follow 4 cables from glow-plug relay which is mounted middle bulkhead)

Effectively impossible to replace without the right tools :(

i really need more info on this too. im getting the pre-heat fault again, and the last one i had changed cost me £90 so i cant afford that again

Hi,
Thanks for the guide, it enabled me to pin point the glow plug on No 1 cylinder as open circuit.
Went to Main Dealer and was met with such tales of woe it's compleley demoralised me.
The cost started at £90 and ended up at £600 as the maybe calamities followed.
"They are well know for snapping as they are being removed and it could mean the engine coming out"
Tried another dealer and was quoted two hours min, taking off the Manifold etc.

I was under the impression that Fiat had special tools to take these out even if they did snap.

I've settled to live with the pre-heat warning for the moment unless there is an easier way.

Find another Dealer/Garage. Doesn't even need to be Fiat as Examiner is NOT required to reset anything.

It's rated as a 0.5 hour job (according to Fiat) so these garages are clearly incompetent

You certainly need special tools but nothing else needs removing aside from engine cover.

My dealer even fitted 4 to mine with a strutbrace fitted in just over an hour. Paid for one hours labour plus parts, about £130 all in i think from memory.
Make sure you agree a price up front regardless of how long it takes them.

Why has nobody attempted to change glowplugs??

I've got a stilo jtd and have the "pre heat" fault message, so it needs the glow plugs changing. But has anybody changed them their selves? because I can't find any info and I dont want to pay anyone to do it for me. My dad is a heavygoods mechanic and I have access to a workshop with all the tools, so surely we could do it. Can anybody enlighten me?

Re: Why has nobody attempted to change glowplugs??

I intend having one of mine changed within a week or so but certainly wont be attempting it myself.

I few have if you use Search (including one complete disaster!)

Re: Why has nobody attempted to change glowplugs??

well how to the garages remove them if they break off???

Re: Why has nobody attempted to change glowplugs??

Sounds silly to me as removing a glow plug is no different to removing a spark plug or any other threaded item.

I've removed and replaced many glow plugs from different vehicles.

Main thing to watch is keeping the socket inline with the glow plug.

Also when replacing them do not over tighten. ( just like spark plugs ).

Can I suggest you make comments like this AFTER you've changed at least one on a JTD.

We'll all be keen to hear how you get on (disaster or otherwise) :D

Whats this special tool then?? My old man's a heavy goods mechanic so I'm sure he's got something suitable that I could use

Sparkplugs are removed more regularly though in the main, so dont have the time to rust / seize.

Re: Why has nobody attempted to change glowplugs??

My pre heat fault light has been coming on for about a month now first intermittently then every time I started.
The other day I took the battery cover off removed the fuses and re seated them, no more pre heat light I guess I must have had a bad connection on the fuse board.
Worth a go costs nothing.

Re: Why has nobody attempted to change glowplugs??

It's not so much the tools more the location of the plugs on the JTD, 1 or 2 are very awkward to get to unless your practiced at it. I had all 4 of mine changed by my dealer last year as I didn't want the hassle and I class myself as quite handy with spanners etc and have taken on some of the bigger jobs on the stilo with no problems.
Many of the experienced owners on here have done the same. If you do attempt it, i'd be interested to hear how you got on.

From memory, i think my dealer charged 1/2 hour labour plus the plugs themselves. i got a set price up front and they stuck to it although it took them about 75 minutes as I have a strutbrace just to make the job extra awkward, LOL
