I checked this morning with my neighbour. he confirms what he told me before. If he registers a new vehicle which is not to be sold on immediately or to be used on the road - he is not required to prove he has insurance for the car. As he says, if he needed to drive it on the road he wouldn't waste time and money getting an individual cover note for that car, he would use trade plates.

So we continue to disagree. I suggest we leave it there.

He has done exactly the right thing and told the insurers the whole story. They have decided he has an insurable interest - presumably based on the family relationship - and covered him.

The insurance company are what is important here, even if he were stopped and the police say he isn't covered, the insurers say he is and that is what matters.

That is utter garbage. It is not possible to register a car without taxing it, as they are one in the same thing.

If he is registering cars that are not sold who is he registering them to?

The Motor Trade is full of Sales Mangers that think they know how the system works but don't, and your neighbour is clearly one of them.

I haven't a clue on this topic about new car registration, but what about if its registered as a pre-reg etc that's used for display in a showroom

In these cases the cars are either registered to the dealership (using their insurance) a Fleet company (using theirs) or to members of staff at the dealership (usually using a 7 day driveaway policy) and then the tax is usually sent back to the DVLA for refund.

Whoever they are registered to, insurance is needed.

also the car has been taxed and registered without being insured so not sure of the rights and wrongs of that but to be honest I don't care as long as it is done. Photos will be posted of it asap.

The last new car I bought was registered to me, I even had a choice of number plate. When I collected the car it was outside, taxed and fuelled up ready to go & the only time insurance was mentioned was at final payment. The guy said 'before I hand the keys over I have to verify that you have insurance to take it on the road'.

Couple of weks ago I put down a deposit on a new panda for the OH. I'm paying for it so receipts etc in my name but it will be registered to her - and no mention yet of insurance docs.
I was told he'd ring me when the car was in & he was to send me a list of available plates for OH to choose one she fancied.

Both these were at the main stealers & not Arthur Daly types.

Just bought a moped for youngest's b'day, it's not yet registered so got to go through all the hassle - it was imported.
The V55/4 - Application for first licence for a new motor vehicle and declaration for registration - states that I must enclose (amongst other things) 'a valid cert of insurance or security in respect of liabilities to 3rd parties...'
