Technical RECALL: Service Solution for Suspension Springs

You may find springs here www.shop4parts.co.uk but if you want my advise [for what its worth] dont fit a standard set go for a set of lowering springs such as Eibach and your problems should not reappear and if you want to go the whole hog fit their shocks as well if you want any more links to where you can get these parts then I will be only to glad to help as will all the guys on here (y)

Thanks for the reply Dan,

All quite recent and I could not get a great look under (given the reduced ride height!)....but I don't think it dug into the tyre.....I'll find out tomorrow perhaps in the daylight when the lorry comes! The tyre certasinly did not burst anyway.

Will the Fiat garage know about Eibach springs...all new to me. Any idea on cost?

Thanks

Arbarth

Thanks again PNL and Dan,

I'll let you know what happens....but its a load of hassle isn't it. I have done quite a few miles in different cars and no springs have ever gone before...doesn't sound right to me.

Like I say, I'll keep you posted. Sorry for the typing/spelling issues...its been a long day.

I am sure the Ford Focus doesn't have a forum like this!

A general one really for all to respond - but today (about 5 hours ago) my front spring broke
The first thing I'd do is book it in for the recall. Not sure how safe it is to drive but I'd be inclined to drive it to the garage. Do that and I reckon you'll get both springs replaced for free :)

There is at present no evidence to suggest that Fiat replacement springs also fail.

The other thing I'd do is to try and get some close-ups of the broken end of the spring and post the results on here. Would be of great interest to us all (y)

Fiat have just released a recall to do with the front springs on all stilo's from start to chassis 00644197.

If you dont receive a letter and your chassis number is below the above then contact your local dealer..... (y)

Had the Stilo taken to the Fiat garage today for replacement springs, and the modification , whatever it is. I have some phots of the spring (attached - in part! - to the car, and also I have the bit of spring that fell off! - Ill try to get some photos downloaded in the next day or two.

thanks againfor your comments, Arbarth

at work when i get a stilo 5044 recall in (springs) the dealer will check the car on the SIGI system, no letter to be needed.

as far as i am aware if the spring has broke Fiat auto would pay for a new spring, shock absorber and in some circumstances roll bar drop links if needed, i have asked the local Fiat uk area manager when he has been to my place of work. if the dealer would refuse to do this then contact Fiat auto UK and tell them of the problems involved, or put your foot down and get them to do it!

Also if anybody got a grande punto (199) they have been recalled as of today for steering colomns, they forgot to put a plate on right hand drive versions making it a 4star safety rating not 5 as advertised, contact your local dealer they could confirm this on SIGI

you mentioned drop links - mine have both gone, had one replaced by fiat under warranty, but they refuse to do the other yet until a month has passed, then they will resubmit a claim under warranty. are fiat aware of a problem with drop links? as well as the spring issues?

Recall was out monday, its a metal plate fitted inside lower cowling so the cowling is changed...handy if you have scratched your with the key;)
10min job while you wait, although its polite to let your dealer arrange a appointment insteard of just turning up unannounced.

took my stilo in MOTORVOUGE Northampton yesterday to have new key coded,as only supplied with one when I got the car.not only was the work done but the recall suspension parts had been ordered and fitted ,all work done within an hour plus keycard supplied good service hope it keps up.I have a 53 reg cost just about £4000

Well this has certainly turned out to be a popular thread... 30 (yes, thirty) posts from PNL must surely be a record for one thread (y)

I think we're now very clear on PNL's viewpoint, and FIAT's official word (and how it translates into practice - thank you T14086 ;))

I have just one question: Of the Stilo springs that HAVE snapped, was corrosion likely to have been a factor, or does it seem like a 'random' break in 'clean' steel?

FIAT are dismissing this as corrosion-related. I have certainly heard of (and seen) springs that snap on other cars for no apparent reason. The break is often part-way up the spring (e.g as PNL said, two coils up from the base) and therefore it seems unlikely to result from salt-rich buildup around the spring perch (strut plate, whatever you call it).

I am very clear on the purpose of the cup-shaped additions...

I have never seen thick steel rust through - it's hard to imagine a spring rusting through... On the other hand I can understand why the spring support might rust through or be weakened enough to bend, but this doesn't seem to be a common problem (well, only reported once).

My question is very important to Stilo owners like me, in NZ, where our springs and struts still look like new (well mine do anyway)... low mileage, no salt on the roads (though it rains a lot), original paint on suspension parts still looking good. It would be nice to know whether the springs are likely to break with no warning, or whether, with no corrosion taking place, they will last normally.

We have, of course, no mechanism for a recall to take place (the thought of a drive to the dealer 140km away and a 'courtesy car' for the three-hour trip home+back to the dealer seems a good joke to me...)

Well here's post 31 Alex :D As you have said in your post here mine broke two coils up from the base and the base of the spring [that I changed] had NO corrosion at all at the base just tarnishing on both parts on the spring at the brake and only time will tell whether the new springs that are now fitted will brake or not WATCH THIS SPACE :)

Alex,

I will get around to posting a photo of my breakage (need to work out the best way of doing so) - breakage was only half a coil up, and a bit of a shear - the breakage is over a 20mm length of the coil ending in a bit of a point, with a small element of surface rust evident where it appears the coating had worn away.

Cheers,

Arbarth

Re: Stilo spring recall

Hey, that's happened to mine - a 2002, 52 plate 115 JTD 5 door. Just had an MOT today and it's failed - LH front spring broken 2 coils up from bottom! Only £200 to get it fixed, that's almost as much as the car is worth!

Fix It Again Tomorrow!
