Technical RECALL: Service Solution for Suspension Springs

This is still an ongoing issue but I'd say, given enough evidence, all 02 owners with spring issues have a right to claim compensation :)

Unfortunately, as the 2nd (or more) owner many of us don't have the same contractual rights as the original purchaser :(

What gets me is fiat are saying that its corrosion that's affecting the springs well if that's the case then I think they should have made all new springs more resistant against corrosion there ARE ways that it can be done and coatings that can be used and wouldn't it have been more beneficial to work out a way so that corrosion didn't build up at the base of the springs rather that just to contain the springs when they do brake they haven't said or confirmed in any way that the new springs when fitted are still NOT going to snap on us so we still have to fear the worst do we :bang: not an enviable position to find ones self in is it :(

Dad had the recall done on his 53 JTD MW last Friday. Is quite a worrying situation as the mod will probably contain the bottom of the spring if it should snap, but if it happens to fail a couple of coils up, what happens then I suppose is anybody's guess :(

if any of the springs are snapped when taken in for its recall fiat dealerships have the right to change the springs free of charge it seems crazy that they arn't changing the springs as in the multipla JTD's. every single stilo is being recalled and having the 'containing rings' fitted and two different kinds being used. the 1.2/1.4/1.6 all use the same part and the 1.8/1.9JTD/2.4 20v all using the other part, also in addition to the work the wheel arch liner needs to be cut back at the top to allow the rings not to come in contact if the strut ever has to deflect that far.

Welcome aboard Fiat Techy nice to have you around with the other Techs on here good advise is always welcome (y)

My dealer says its a 2 hour job and they have to take the 'covers off' is he correct? What do they actually do? Are they cutting arch covers as above?

Thanks

Left my car with the dealer this morning. Airbag module and spring cups to be replaced. Hope it's ready soon, it's a long walk from Ballymena to Holywood!!

I booked my car into my local FIAT dealer on Frday for this spring recall - no probs!
However they phoned me today to say I would need to produce the recall letter to them so they can stamp it and claim the expenses back.
I do not however have letter so FIAT will not repair my car.

Can anyone tell me if this is correct?

Also - FIAT told me that no other dealer should have started the repairs yet as it has only just been issued I told them that i knew of others (on here) who had the repair done - they said I must be wrong as no one has done any repairs to any vehicles as yet?

Is my dealer just telling me cack? and do I need a letter to get my car repaired???

Thanks

Been doing this recall for weeks now.

Most customers who come in dont have letters, alot dont know until we mention it as they are in for a repair/service etc & are happy to let us carry out the recall which is clearly marked on the SIGI printout.

Hi,

A general one really for all to respond - but today (about 5 hours ago) my front spring broke, thankfully only doing about 20mph at the time...a bit of a clunk a feeling that I had run over something and a metallic noise from the road. I knew about the fiat forum - and logged on to find notes about a recall which apparantly started about 3 weeks ago....I have not received a recall notice. I would appreciate any info anyone has as to the prospect f fiat paying....I certainly think they should ! Hoping to hear from anyone soon, Arbarth!

Hello to you and first of all let me say WELCOME (y) now if you have read this thread fully you will see that I for one am not happy with the situation regarding the front spring breakages I went and bought two new spring and other associated parts and started to sort out the fitting when I had a pm from Neuman R who is a DET for fiat saying I shouldn't have to pay and so I contacted fiat and they gave me a case No now I had to sort out the fitting of the nearside one as the spring had broken and the car could not be moved now for the second one this was inspected my a dealer and they changed it and said all costs will be paid by fiat I heard no more about it until my wife and I were in there one day and I asked him if he had heard anything from fiat and he said that they had now refused to pay for the springs and also his cost for doing the other one and have refused to make any further comment  so if you want to try Good luck hope you have more luck than I did (y)

Thanks PNL....I could have guessed I would be in for a battle....but I like a challenge!!!

Forgive me for the styles of my replies.....but I am sure I will get used to the 'system' (and computers!) soon...he says!

In the time I have had I have not been able to read all the thread...but I guess your spring broke too? Sounds like a dangerous event...mine was at low speed thankfully.

Any idea how much am I looking at? And would I need to replace both? (or all four!!!!).

I am like sometime like a dog that won't let go ...so lets ope Fiat sorts this one out sooner rather than later!

PS mines a 5dr Abarth, owned from new, with relatively high miles....but despite the faults, it would be hard to say what I could replace it with.

Regards

Arbarth

if your going to replace them then I would reccomend not getting FIAT ones as its always in the back of your head that they're going to break again  get some eibach springs instead (y)

Just out of interest abarth did your spring dig into the tyre or not?

Dan
