Technical RECALL: Service Solution for Suspension Springs

Technical RECALL: Service Solution for Suspension Springs

The results of Bombay's action not withstanding I would make the following comments:

If you're any type of keen driver, stick a set of Eibachs on (or perhaps other brands).

I had assumed that they would make the car much stiffer and knacker the ride. I only swapped mine due to the spring snapping. However once done the improvement in the car is amazing!

Ride is hardly effected but all other measurables are better. I have kept the stock shocks and they match well with the new springs. They aren't too hard by any means (in fact softer than the stock units on the mk5 Golf hire car I had). They have also cured the suspension of tying itself in knots given the merest hint of fast direction change.

The car is now a pleasure to drive round challenging bends.

The loss in ride height is arse but it was rubbish anyway so the difference isn't that significant.

If you plan the timing of buying/fitting it should be pretty cheap too.

Quite why this set-up wasn't offered as a sports option from the word go I don't know. Probably would have convinced more people to buy a Stilo.....

Hope that this helps anyone with doubts/thoughts about fitting Eibachs.

As for Dave comments about “Not really worth posting anything at all then is it”. he could have said the same about T14086. (Originally Posted by T14086

but he chose not to, so it’s not worth you posting these comments either, is it Dave.(n)

Bombay...it was the way you (and Topmark5) were 'demanding me' to make public my theory...again you have no right! Carrying on in this manner will only get you in trouble on this forum.

However I did discuss 'my theory' with Stuart...but a slight (well moretan a 'slight'!) oversight on my part ment it was shot down in flames:rolleyes: ooops oh well back to the drawing board:(

Like yourself and everyone else here the dealers are just as welcoming to see a end to this but its up to Fiat Italy to release/instruct or publish any findings.Casting accusations/name calling gets us nowhere.
Despite what you may or may not think I hope you & your independent investigation come up trumps for all stilo owners and a end is in sight for this thread.......heres hoping oneday:)

I can't fit lowered springs due to insurance wanting another £200 a year, however I'm currently looking into getting a set of stiffer springs at standard height which wont affect the insurance.

I once had a set made up for my GTIR by a company up north called coilsprings.co.uk (or something similar).

I'd like to hear your results with stock height springs (if ever you get there). Would make a nice option for any members who are scared of lowering the car (as I was).

I've just given up trying to drive either-side of the stupid speed bumps they have round my way. I like my sump to stay attached to the car.

I think I have given that companies link on this thread some where Cris but never the less I think this would be the correct course of action to take if members wished to keep their cars at standard height I recall Dan the man getting a quote for a pair of fronts off them for around the £95 mark[I'm sure Dan will comment on this ]but once again for you people here is the link again www.coilsprings.co.uk :)

£95 for a pair of fronts sounds about right to me from memory.

Took a couple of weeks to get sort as I'd sent them a pair for reference.

Would probably be easier if you actually knew the rates an could just get them made up.

PS If you have the mechano mod and Eibachs might be worth checking they don't foul the new springs. Mine did on the offside and required some "persuasion" to stop it.

bet i wont

I Bet you would !!

If someone you care for has a serious accident/injury due to the the inadequate springs Fiat fit!!!

As I was given no reassurance that the replacement springs available from Fiat were of superior quality compared to the breaking originals I decided that my family and children deserved an alternative make, these indeed may not be better, but surely aftermarket springs can not be as poor as Fiat originals.

You decide - how much proof will you need !!

Until we actually get to hear the results of Bombays independent tests then we cant really comment, Phil has always been jumping up and down about this, and feels very strongly about it, which I totally understand, but Bombay releases the information to the public then we cant comment as we dont have the same information.

And quite understandably to NumanR as this IS a major unspeakable fault that these springs have and in no way in my opinion had the field testing they should have had even MFI test the durability of their draw runners on their draws don't they :) so given the fact that this is a major fault built into the spring then its incredible they didn't realise it many years ago as they did with the ***** ** car as this had the very same fault but that company took the time to find out what it was and did some thing about it

It makes me so angry when I run the gauntlet every day in my car and have like a bloody fool payed for the privilege because as you all know it was I that paid for the front springs and not fiat as they even refused to acknowledge the fault and didn't compensate me for any of the parts I purchased.. its a bit like rubbing SALT into an open wound not realising that when I bought the new springs that I was purchasing a potential death trap so as NumanR has just said you can see WHY I feel so strongly about it I don't wish to have a go at anyone in particular but that really beats the biscuit  and has just added insult to the injury so as to speak :( and the fact that it tarnishes the reputation of a very nice car.

I had it done earlier this week when I had my car booked in for something else. Don't know how long it took, as I left it there for 7 hours anyway. But it should not take more than a day for sure.

yep £95 + VAT for fronts and i assume similar price for rears.

they say the springs are around 25% stiffer as well for better handling and not as much body roll :slayer:

I'm having the shocks replaced as well when it gets serviced so I'll get everything done at the same time ;)

Hi, an update on my own car 1.9JTD m/w, had a spring snap & tyre puncture a week before xmas, after numerous calls to the 08000FIAT no & getting nowhere, they suggested i write to Fiat UK at Slough, & lo n behold i've received a goodwill gesture cheque covering all the costs of the repair £250 nearly, so a little slap on the back for Fiat , just a little 1!!!!!

i only heard about this last week- according to fiat my car wasn't on the database and i phoned them today with chassis number, its in at local garage later this week, i work about 10 mins walk from a fiat garage so am taking it in mid morning and hoping it will be ready for mid-late afternoon, or at least arrange a drop off (trouble is they can't park in works premises and reception might not let them leave a key :bang:
