Technical RECALL: Service Solution for Suspension Springs

My 52 plate 1.9 JTD multiwagon failed it's 1st MOT last year with fractured front n/s suspension coil. I don't know when it happened but it cost £120 to be rectified. Took it in for this year's MOT and low and behold it failed on fractured front o/s suspension coil. Again don't know when this happened but I suspect I've been driving around for a while. Fortunately the coil lodge on the anti-roll bar which is probably why I didn't notice. I do high mileage 97K on Feb 03 plate and have done a return trip to Porto in last 9 months....1600 miles in 4 days!!!!! Just glad the suspension didn't fail on european motorway system!!!

I called Fiat and was told about the recall...now booked in for modification, and am sending bills for both repairs to Fiat in hope they have a goodwill gesture.

It seems to me like people are getting this done post-haste, but I've been waiting since January for my local dealer to get the parts in! Anyone had this done in central Scotland that could recommend a dealer who actually has the parts? Reckon if I told them I wanted a new exhaust and floor mats I might get booked in quicker?
I'd switch the springs to some aftermarket ones if I could afford it- especially with the ominous noises coming from some corners about the springs, but I took a better, lower paid job recently and I'm suffering for it, especially as the exhaust is on the way out, and the clutch will be by the summer too.

Took mt letter in about a month ago now Chris and was told no parts  and still waiting ..only did it TBO to cover my arse incase another one of the springs go again :)

Hi de Hi :)

Like a lot of guys here, I'm still waiting for the garage to
let me know the parts have arrived for the suspension fix.
Just not good enough!!

I wonder if anyone has done any research on what the
average mileage that these suspension springs fail?

Perhaps the guys with the spring failures could let us know
at roughly what mileage they failed.

Cheers + Beers for now - safe driving. ;)

I called the garage and told them I was just going to go elsewhere- a little birdie told me a garage about an hour from me would have the parts- which was a shame because I needed my exhaust looked at and wanted to buy some mats while I was at it. They booked it in for Thursday, saying they'd just got the parts this week and they'd left a voicemail for me (I don't have voicemail).
Coincidence?

Thanks for your reply and info Stuart -

Just the info I was looking for. Nice one ;)

Got the call from the garage yesterday morning
to say the parts were in for the spring recall.
So hope to get that done soon.

Think the garage must be looking at this forum. Hi.

Thanks again for your input.

Cheers + Beers - safe driving.

CUL :)

Just got my MW back from Coventry Motors ahving booked it in last friday for the suspension mod to be done today. Excellent service, called me at 12:00 to say car was ready, they even washed it for me.....saved me a job:D

Now to start chasing Fiat for reimbursement of replacement springs costs.

Just thought I'd post this for information as well, as a reader of Car Mechanics magazine (about 8 months worth) there have been at least 3 articles in there about spring breaks on other cars, most recent on a 2001 Renault Laguna where the spring broke free of the cup and shot down the entire lentgh of the strut.

It suprises how often springs break on such new(ish) cars.

Well, got the mod done today, eventually, at Park's Fiat/Skoda in Hamilton. Dropped it off at half 8 and picked it up at half 5 after work, no bother at all. :) They didn't wash it, like some places (in fact it looked dirtier) though I didn't expect that!:p
It looks ok, & pretty firmly put-together. The service was fair, they checked my exhaust for me and confirmed my suspicion that the flexi is on the way out, they didn't even complain about the awkward alloys which need spacers and patience to get on- but they weren't exactly friendly or overly-helpful, in fact the customer relations guy seemed thoroughly depressed. Maybe I'll take him some flowers on the way to work tomorrow.

Just to mention that on that link I gave they do a shock made by Boge ..I have used these shocks before and they are made in Germany and well engineered to a high standard ..they also do and uprated standard height shock called the Turbo ..these are gas operated and can be bought in the front and rears for the stilo:)

Fronts -- £48-50p ea inc vat.
Rears [automatic gas] £34-50p ea inc vat.

Front Suspension Recall?

I'm pretty sure I saw somewhere that there was a recall on the front suspension of Stilo's was this the case? The reason i'm asking is that i've recently taken my car in for repair after an accident and they've told me that the front suspension has either broke or collapsed not sure which and they reckon it could have been caused by the accident but i'm not so sure!

If it was caused before the accident that could explain why all the cars i have driven since seem unstable at high speed!

Re: Front Suspension Recall?

yes mate they was a recall mine snaped last friday, is due in this friday to be repared for free, do a search for more info.

Re: Front Suspension Recall?
