Notes for the broken spring poll
  1. This poll is about broken springs so if yours are still OK (so far) then please ONLY answer one of the two questions at the end.
  2. It’s a multiple choice poll so if you’ve had two failures then try to enter the info for both.
  3. If your dealer changed both springs for one incident then enter this as a single failure.
  4. I’ve never heard of rear spring failure but the option is there just in case

We all know they break so hopefully this might show a trend

Stu, to stop peeps doing what you just did :p can you change the title to read something like " - Read Notes BEFORE Voting" as I think most people vote and then read messages afterwards :(

Re: Broken (Front) Springs - READ NOTES BEFORE VOTING

Oooo good poll Argo (y) as you all know both of my front springs have been changed one by me and the other by dealer also top mounts and tie bars changed the same time :) forgot to put in the poll but my dealer has changed the rear springs because of brakage but they werent mine :) I havnt see anyone report the rears braking on the forum but that all might change with the poll :D

Re: Broken (Front) Springs - READ NOTES BEFORE VOTING

For us people who don't worry to much about mechanics, is it obvious when the springs are broken??

And what about us people with multiple Stilo's?? :p

No direct experience myself but I gather it's not that obvious if the break occurs close to the end of the spring. I think the giveaway are strange noises from the suspension and visual (slightly down on one side).

You of all people can surely manage a fake user ID  :p ;)

Recall started today on ALL stilos with chassis up to 00644197...

Should receive a letter in the post

Finally a god move! :)

Re: Broken (Front) Springs - READ NOTES BEFORE VOTING

Good on you Argonought! My Stilo was in overnight on each occasion a front spring was replaced (one was a failure, the other precautionary) because they "weren't carried in stock" and "the wrong part came in"...

Re: Broken (Front) Springs - READ NOTES BEFORE VOTING

Well that's me in for the recall then. All original springs and still got 4 wheels on my wagon.:)

If a spring snaps then it depends where the break occurs. At the worst point the spring remnant can jam into the tyre when you're travelling at speed and the next thing you know your car is sliding along on its roof on the motorway

Curious as to what a spacer can do to prevent the breaking of the spring, thought they were just too brittle at manufacture, guessing something to do with the spring unable to rotate. Maybe that's partly the cause of the creaking front suspension.

Be nice to get it fixed:D

Re: Broken (Front) Springs - READ NOTES BEFORE VOTING

Ok, sorted out the poll - so many have voted that didn't have broken springs [we are only supposed to vote in bottom two categories] - so have edited all the numbers, although if you click on the numbers it shows those who mis-voted ;)

Well done Stu (y)

There’s still a few oddities :(

Schweck: Front spring (I‘m guessing ;) ) = 5

Registered 2002 = 4 (add PNL)
Registered 2004 = 0
Registered 2005 = 0 (Pretty sure PNL’s motor is an 02 model?)

Stilo Abarth 2.4 = 1
Stilo Multiwagon = 0
Stilo 1.2 = 0

Fairly strong trends have developed:

At least 20% of members affected by spring failure which is most likely to occur on 02/03 registered Stilos at a mileage of 20k to 40k.

so how many here have actually had springs break?
I think you'll find it's 6 people (about 17.5%) with ABZSTILO actually suffering breaks on both sides of his car.

The results would be a lot easier to see if people didn't keep entering full details when their spring are OK

Thing about polls I guess - people just love to take part :D

I've messed it up too, my springs are OK, but i've selectet 1.4  Hope you can sort this up. Sorry didn't pay attention to the rules of voting. I am on this forum about 2 years but this is my first post. Better to start this way than asking for help about some problem with the car. ;)
