Technical rear brakes problem

got a punto 95 1.1 that was not driven for about a year

failed mot test cuz of right rear foot brake (cylinder was seized) and left handbrake was on the limit, but still working, also left rear foot brake was on the limit- later discovered that cylinder was only pushing out on one side

so i changed both rear brakes cylinders and brake pipes, bleed both rear brakes, adjusted both rear pads so the drum would fit on tightly but still move freely, removed the drum lip which was rly small, applied copper grease on the back, used brake cleaner on pads and drum, and drove it there again

now it showed that left rear foot brake and handbrake wasnt working how it should despite new cylinder, around 40-50% difference in braking between left and right rear wheel


dunno what seems to be da problem, perhaps a handbrake cable?

thats just brake cleaner which i sprayed few secs before making photo

if it's poor on LHS for BOTH the parking and service brakes then its a mechanical defect or contaminated friction material..??,
there seems to be a shadow on the RH lower edge..!!

bad cable won't effect the foot brake - load proportioning valve wont effect the handbrake..!!

just an idea.. did you give it plenty of use on the way to the station ??,

i also found out when handbrake is applied, only 1 brake pad moves
used sandpaper on the brake pads to remove any old stuff that might be there
drum diameter seems around 180mm, im running out of ideas rly strange

Are the adjusters correctly fitted on shoes I had a lot of probs with mine failing and it turned out to be them

How did you remove the lip from the drums? just wondering if you had them skimmed if they are not true?

the cable pulls an arm that does tend to pull 1 shoe 1st ( per side)

with BOTH wheels raised do 1 Click at a time on the handbrake,
look for ovality / imbalace of each hub AND major changes side to sode they should lock within 1 click of each other,

Air (or fluid) leak wouldnt affect handbrake. Has to be loss of friction between shoes and drum.

I'd bet the auto adjusters on your brakes are crap.
The teeth might not be at an angle or very deep; a lot of aftermarket brakes for the Punto are like this from my experience, I'd check that the auto adjusters and working and that the teeth are good.

auto adjusters work and have good teeth on them, i have just changed the left handbrake cable but it may appear it didnt solve anything, handbrake mechanism is still tilted to one side when i pull the handbrake, probably need to change the right one too

ahh i see, mine was the same and to some degree still pulls more on one side (at the handbrake lever only) even with a full replacement of the rear brakes including: Cables, drums, shoes, auto adjusters and clyinders.

when i started going through the brakes i first replaced the cables also. However, in the end i had to replace everything because the hand brake wasn't engaging fully. The mechinisam for the brake shoes had bent slightly, only noticed it when I had the replacement parts next to them!

If you haven't already then maybe try replacing the brake shoes? however, given that neither your footbrake or hand brake is working then it might be worth replacing the drums also? any lip on the drum is bad really.

didnt change the brake shoes cuz i compared mine to the new one prior to buying them and there was almost no difference

hand and foot brake was working, just not as much as on the right side, there was a small lip on the drum which i removed with sandpaper

so after u changed everything was the handbrake lever leveled finally?

almost mot time, took it on a preventive mot and it failed on same stuff like last year, left rear handbrake works bad, like 55% difference in braking power between left and right, rear foot brake works normally on both wheels tho, last year i changed shoes+ rear cylinders+ both handbrake cables-they sit normally in their holders, even tried switching drum from good side to bad one, i assembled shoes same on each side put on the drum, pump brake, i could hear those teeth clicking, nothing helped and i gave up, they let me pass even with this strange problem

now i wanna get to the bottom of this but dunno what to do

My does the same. I recon this is normal. There are two cables but only one lever that pulls them (inspect the adjuster mechanism at the lever). The cables are not exactly even so is normal that one tensions earlier then the other. So if at 3 clicks one wheel is 100% and the other one is 30%, then at 4 clicks the 30% one should go higher. If not then there is a problem. So if you pull the leaver more then both wheels eventually should be 100%.

its exactly like that, when the guy was pulling handbrake lever i could see like 400 on left wheel and 800 on right and then he stopped
