What engine/ year do you have?
Have you checked the mounting bolts for the fan?

Check fan, bolts, rubber mounts.
If it's a new fan, it's likely to have been fitted badly. (Or to be the wrong fan.)

Check the fan hasn't snapped one side of the pin that allows it to spin on the motor

When I turn the fan it rubs on the top of the fan case, if I bend the fan against the motor (towards cockpit) it stops rubbing so I guess it was mounted wrong ? Or is it still possible the car was in an accident and the mounting points are bent or something ?
It's possible, but I'd expect very obvious radiator damage (or a new radiator, clean and shiny) were that the case.

could be there is a washer missing meaning the fans motor isn't sat correctly
However - the 2 types of fan
1 has less blades on the fan is removable
the other has more blades on the fan, and isn't removable from the cowling

That removes the fan and the cowling from the radiator
Dont forget to unplug the electrical connector
Then once its on the bench, you will see 3x bolts in the centre of the fan
may need to spin the fan out the way for each bolt
