General quick clutch question

put the clutch on my new engine but it sounds rusty when being turned, all surfaces are clean. i read the haynes manual but does say anything about using any grease on any part ect.

does this sound right? should it sound like this?

Are you turning the engine by hand with the gearbox off?

So its not actually the clutch thats turning, its the engine thats turning, yes?

well as you know im not clued up on engines but when the cam belt is turned a rustic noise comes from the clutch area, so im guessing its the clutch

Nope. The clutch is attached to the flywheel and with the box out of the car there is nothing attached to it. The inner plate is held in place by the pressure from the outer 'pressure' plate. The splines on the gearbox input shaft go into the splines on the centre inner disc. When the clutch pedal is pressed the pressure of the outer plate is released allowing the inner plate to spin independantly of the outer.

Turning the engine over should not cause any sounds of a rustic nature, the only thing I can think of is one of the flywheel cover plates is out of alignment and rubbing on the flywheel.
